I use VLC player and its ok at best.

Problem is that the SVP package would most likely rape my system due to my specs

Ya it puts my 965BE to about 40-45 percent on all cores. Not sure about my gpu but I only have a gt430 so it's nothing special.

why do they all suck at quality without these?

do you need codecs anymore or no?

1) You don't need codec packs. Ever! if you have any uninstall them now.
2) LAV filters, among others, are 3rd party filters that (supposedly) do a better job than the ones built in to the player, i.e MPC-HC. Most people won't be able to tell the difference and will be quite happy just running the player as is.
3) SVP is a software package that provides high framerate (HFR) playback of standard framerate video by using a method called frame interpolation.

If you want a nice easy life, go download MPC-HC, install it, and start watching some good movies. Job done.

I am using MPC and always have.

there are many posts on different forums from this year and last year complaining about quality.

vlc quality sucks now apparently no longer king.
mpc sucks without lav filter.

this is better than that etc.

I don't get it I thought they were all the same but had different looks and some could only play certain things unless you got codec pack like klite or ffmpeg.

Just try them all and experiment. Find the solution that appeals to you. Don't take our advice, all we do is try our damnedest to validate what we already own and run. Think and reason for yourself.
