Mikael Akerfeldt, hands down. His clean voice is absolutely amazing, and his death growls and are not only freaking intense as hell, but he can enunciate as well.

Can you list what bands these people are lead singers of? I don't recognize most of them.

I beat you to it on page 1, but that makes 2 of us time for him to go up on the poll!

Metallica is a form of metal but, imo, the groups I listened to in the 60s and 70s were the beginning of the overall metal genre. Iron Butterfly, Deep Purple (even though they despised that categorization), Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, UFO, Grand Funk Railroad, Blue Oyster Cult, Judas Preist, and guitarists like Jimmy Hendrix and Robin Trower defined what metal was. Listen to some of the stuff that MC5 did back in the 60s too, which was not only metal but punkish long before anything was known as "punk." Many of those bands broke off to forge other sub-genres of metal as well. Motorhead was probably the beginning of speed metal. Nothing with the fast fury of "Ace of Spades" had been heard before they came out with that song.

All this argumentation concerning what's metal and what's not is pretty ridiculous, at least without some historical perspective. But all of the singers listed in the poll are definitely metal and Dio is certainly metal too. Hell, he teamed up with Blackmore, one of the founders of the metal sound. Just standing in close proximity to Blackmore makes you metal.

Holy crap....I agree with TLC. I guess as long as it isn't in the P&N forum...you actually make some sense and a reasonable argument.

The simple point is it is impossible to classify groups or singers from different eras using a measuring stick that constantly changes/evolves.

Dio is metal. Judas Priest is metal. A whole host of others that wouldn't fit the standard definition of metal in most people's eyes today are still metal.

Just as The Beatles, Elvis or Bill Haley and the Comets might not be classified as rock today by a majority of people....context (in this case...era) matters. In their day, they were the epitome of rock just as some of the older groups or singers were the epitome of early metal.
