Best Micro$oft OS?

I'd have to say my fav is w2k, though I'm currently using XP which I think is good too.

My roommate/best friend swears up and down by ME. I've tried my d@mnedest but I can't seem to change his mind.

I like windows 98/ME because I can manually assigned IRQ within the OS.
Windows 2000/XP assign IRQ automatically. Although most pci devices work fine sharing but certain pci device such as video editing (Matrox RT2500) needs an exclusive IRQ...it becomes problematic. I don't like the OS taking advantage of the ACPI mode, you can not overwrite the IRQ on the OS from the BIOS.

One weird thing on XP, I have 18GB hd formatted as NTFS, I used 9GB and about 8GB free. Windows XP consistantly alert that my C drive is out of space. (by the way the whole 18GB is one partition C).

I'm going to demote myself from XP to Windows 98 or ME.

Other thing I hate activating XP.

Windows 2000 and (afaik) XP can be installed in a way that they do not use ACPI. Anyway, I can't imagine trying to do some professional video editing (I'd assume that's what someone would use a Matrox RT2500 for) on a DOS-based OS. It would simply be too prone to crash with lots of resource utilization with big video files (and btw, you do know, right, that a FAT32 partition limits you to 2GB per file? what about those long uncompressed videos?).

Something is messed up, then because a normal WinXP system won't do that (unless you mean leaving warnings in the event log, which both of my WinXP systems do). Even my one system which has a 4.3GB disk (with a 3GB partition for WinXP, 70% full) doesn't complain about being out of space.

LMAO, reminds me of the one Max. PC article in which the editors and staff members were wishing for computer hardware that they'd like to see, and one guy said that he'd like a waterproof laptop for use in the bathroom while "taking a sh...ower."

Already tried installing XP as "standard pc" but won't help.

the alert messsage is not from the event viewer, xp alerts me with the windows says that c drive is running out of space, you need to do compression, remove some files/apps etc.

if i can get the RT2500 on windows xp with 7VRXP mb there is no way i would go back to 98/me

I assume you've already tried setting the option in your BIOS for "PnP OS" to "No" and installing Windows XP in standard pc mode. Also, if XP still won't let you change IRQs, have you tried Windows 2000 Pro? It's not quite as new, but it's pretty much like XP except without all the "bloat"

My motherboard, GA-7VRXP, bios does not have that 'pnp os' selection. XP was better managing irq than 2000 pro. 2k pro put all to irq 9. I don't know why it just pick certain irq and stick with it. What about other loads of free IRQs? Microsoft should make their OS little bit smarter.

sorry I havent really read back on the whole discussion, but if when you first boot with 2K or XP, you hit F5 repeatedly it will allow you the option of installing as a "Standard PC". This allows the IRQs to be normal rather than all using one.

i use flash, photoshop, and form z almost all the time. win 2k is great. never have any probs with these programs. 2k is a great os.

Win2k. I don't think we'll see another Micro$oft OS with the same stringent development period that was given to 2k.

Definetly Win2K, I liked it so much I even got the release poster and sadly put it on my wall! WinMe or 98SE for games though. XP is fairly good but I'd of rathered it would run on slower systems instead of being so "flashy", they made it too demanding.

I have to agree with this one, If you are a "user" Win XP is the way to go
If you know what your doing than it's a toss up between Win XP and 2K (depending on applications you run, hardware you have, things you use it for, etc...)

The only major problem I have with XP is the search feature which has been kiddified and AFSIK can't be changed.
