That's a tough one

A Bridge Too Far is good
So is The Longest Day, Patton, Midway, and of course Tora, Tora, Tora

The Great Escape is damn good as well. Don't really count it as a war movie though.

Still my favorite is probably We Were Soldiers That movie blew me away the first time I saw it and still does. Knew several guys, served with a couple, who were in Vietnam and they were amazed how accurate that movie was. All the way down to the way the death notices were delivered.

Of course Band of Brothers is awesome, but I don't count it since it is so long and wasn't a theatrical release.

The two Sheen movies are not very good depictions of the Vietnam war. We Were Brothers, Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, and Courage Under Fire.

Fixed for you. Those are not accurate depictions. But if you want to believe they are, what's wrong with adding Forest Gump to the list?

Lots of good movies listed. I would have to say Band of Brothers is #1 on my list. No matter how many times I've seen it I will always stop and watch it. A few others I would add to the list is Enemy at the Gates, Gettysburg and Gods and Generals

A few of my favorites:

Band of Brothers
Patton
A Bridge Too Far
Bridge on the River Kwai
We Were Soldiers
Hamburger Hill
Tora Tora Tora!
Black Hawk Down
Saving Private Ryan

Gen. Hal Moore is a real character in person. I called him up and had him autograph copies of "We Were Soldiers" for my dad, brother and father-in-law as Christmas presents. 70-something years old and the guy is still tough as nails...but his wife still calls the shots in the house. Terrific guy.

Hamburger Hill has one of the greatest exchanges in a war movie:
Newsman: Hey, word down at division is you guys can't take this hill. What do you have to say about that? In fact Senator Kennedy insists you guys haven't got a chance at all.
Sgt. Franz: You really like this sh!t, don't you? It's your job, a story, wait here like a fvcking vulture for someone to die so you can take a picture.
Newsman: It's my job...
Sgt. Franz: I got more respect for those little bastards up on the hill. They take a side, you just take pictures. You probably don't even do your own fvcking!
Newsman: What?
Sgt. Franz: You listen to me. We're gonna take this fvcking hill, Newsman. And if I catch you on top taking pictures of any of my people, I will blow your fvcking head off. You haven't earned a right to be here. You got that?

I just saw Black Hawk Down the other day. I was kind of out of it when I watched, though.

I swear, I'll get to bed before 4:30 tonight.

BHD, BOB, SPR, Das Boot, FMJ, Top Gun

Regarding why Tears of the Sun isn't a good military movie is all of the hollywood sh!t thrown in there, especially with the aircraft. A SLAM exploded like a cluster bomb, come on.

Band of Brothers should go ahead and count. and is probably the best.
Full Metal Jacket
Apocolypse Now
Patton
Dr. Strangelove sort of counts. good movie, though.
Hearts of Darkness, while technically just a documentary on the making of a war movie, is pretty amazing.
i think full metal jacket gets more credit for depicting an attitude that i think is fairly accurate, much like catch-22.
platoon was a pretty great movie.

i think saving private ryan is probably the worst war movie ive ever seen. if we can get past the first 20 minutes of that being great film-making, its hard to argue a case for the rest of that movie.

And you have Top Gun as a great military movie? Hello pot, meet kettle.

So many good ones mentioned here already.

Two comedies that might be worth mentioning:
MASH
Kelly's Heroes

I suppose they're more war movies than military movies. Is there a distinction?

1. The Bridge on the River Kwai
2. Good Morning, Vietnam
3. Saving Private Ryan
4. Tora Tora Tora!
5. MASH

Why no Band of Brothers? For 1 it is not a movie. If we are going with drama series it is in the top 3, but still not as good as MASH or China Beach. Its up there though. I guess many here have not seen many of these films, nor series.
