Black Hawk Down has greatest replay value IMO. I can watch it over and over. Sunday afternoons or Friday beer nights.

I tried to like Saving Private Ryan but failed to do so. I've seen it about 5-6 times and can't find anything that truly gets me interested.
I've watched Thin Red Line once and nearly turned it off a number of times. Maybe I just didn't get it but it was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen.

I finally saw Das Boot not too long ago. I must say that is one of the most overrated military movies ever. The pacing was incredible, but I couldn't stand the overboard acting. It was really hard to gain sympathy or any feelings for any character.

1) Kelly's Heroes
2) The Hunt for Red October
3) Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan got my vote. Full Metal Jacket was right behind it though.

Just kidding, I chose Patton.

Ditto. Patton is a classic in every sense. I had a tough time choosing that or FMJ.

I look for dialog and story as opposed to action. Probably why I didn't give much for Saving Private Ryan (has a good story, but didn't care for the large amounts of action to carry it).

I'll admit that Black Hawk Down is all that (just action) -- but it doesn't pretend to be anything else. Its an action movie meant for beer nights with good replay value so I can appreciate it.

The Thin Red Line is a great film, but it's not for everybody. The timing wasn't great, since everyone was expecting SPR in the Pacific, and some people just don't dig Terrence Malick's style.

This poll, along with most other polls, will mostly just reflect the age group of the participants. Expect the more recent movies to be far in front of this poll, regardless of how good they are.

It's like asking who the hottest chick ever was. Since the majority of posters are 15-24, the votes will reflect that, and the woman who popular during that time period will win. If you take the same vote on a forum mostly populated by WW2 veterans, you're going to find that a woman who was popular when they were younger (1940s/1950s) will win.

So many good movies, hard to pick just one. But...I chose Apocolypse Now.

Nice list you've assembled, it would be great start on a good film library.

John Wayne should have stuck to westerns...still can't stand how he can have his perfectly starched uniform in the heat of battle...

Black Hawk down for realism. No cheesy plot, no major philosophical discourse about war. No stupid heroics (as in no screaming "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" in suicidal glory while firing a pistol at a jet or some sh!t like that).

It's as close as civilians can get to the actual event.

TOP GUN DAWGS

nah - there are a ton of excellent movies on that list - I can't really vote for one because I hold a lot of them on the highest peak of my war movie opinion ratings and I think that to vote for any one in particular would be a disservice to the others that are equally as good IMO.

Fixed

The day those movies are considered remotely realistic is the day metrosexuals grow balls.

Same with most westerns. All of that gung-ho sh!t never existed in the way is was presented in ANY of those movies.

The only thing those movies do is glorify war via typical hollywood romance and glory, and then make a few "high and poofy" philosophical statements about how sh!tty is is. Saving private Ryan and the like intend to show you what it's really like, scare the sh!t out of you, make you lose/regain your faith in humanity, and SHOW you why it's sh!tty.

Up until I was 13, I actually believed all of that gung-ho army stuff. Then I saw Saving Private Ryan, and heard the endorsements of D-Day Veterens. Any romantic notion I had about war was knocked out in the 1st ten minutes of the film.

The beginning is definitely one of the funniest sections of any movie ("you are a disgusting fatbody!"); but as soon as Pile goes crazy you can tell the movie is going a different direction.

Some good choices in that list.
Full Metal Jacket would be close to the top of my favoirite list, as would be:
We Were Soldiers
Saving Private Ryan

Slightly different category:
Sands of Iwo Jima
Tora, Tora, Tora
Midway
In Harm's Way
Bridge Over the River Kwai

Twelve O'Clock High - veterans give it the most realistic rendition of their experiences in the air corp of WW2

Saving Private Ryan - the combat scenes are forever seared in my memory; I personally knew a WW2 vet who landed at Omaha and was in the Battle of the Bulge and said they caught warfare and its horrors almost perfectly.

The Longest Day - very factual (even if it doea have John Wayne )
