Full Metal Jacket is one of my favorites.

Das Boot is on the list, it's just hard to spot b/c the list is long and not in alphabetical order. Excellent movie, imo.

Jarhead is officially the first movie war movie I have ever seen. I watched it last night and I thought it was very good. Kept me up until 2:30AM.

I guess I should watch Black Hawk Down.

Actually the line is "I am personally going to shoot that paper hanging son-of-a-bitch", referring to Adolf Hitler who was a house painter and wall paper hanger before he went over to the dark side.

BHD > Private Ryan. Both are awesome films, but I got touched by BHD more.

I voted for Gettysburg because it's a classic because I'm nostalgic.

Really? I thought he meant paperhanger as in someone who writes bad cheques (or passes bad paper) referring to the 1938 "peace resolution" which in retrospect was considered ungenuine.

Saving Private Ryan. The story may have been cheesy but the battles left me shell shocked for a full day after watching it.

The story wasn't cheesy at all. In fact, the message the story gives was the most significant of any war movie ever made.

Yeah considering a similar event (4 brothers serving on a single ship that was destroyed), left parents with no kids, enacted one of the most important policies in WW2.

That's not the central message of the film.

It really surprises me that so many people miss it.

Never said it was the central message, I'm just saying thats what the movie was loosely based around..

But what is the central message oh wise one?

No need to roll your eyes. I'm not trying to act superior here.

The central message of SPR is that we are all Private Ryan. Ryan was just a euphemism for all of us. We all need to "earn this."

A message my WWII veteran father tried over and over to instill in his children. And it never quite sunk in until I watched this movie decades after he died.

QFT... flat out...

because it was an accurate depiction of the events of that day..
that movie is about 90% fact blow by blow of what happened.

the book was fantastic as well..

Cant beleive more people dont like We Were Soldiers..
that movie (and book) is also very close to how it happened that day.

in fact the real life chopper pilot depicted in this movie finally got his CMoH just last week..

Hep topic. Lame poll. Seriousry, there are too many good movies missing and several crap ones that aren't even in the running for best.

I happen to have a short list, a few of which have been mentioned by others but alas most of which are conspicuously AWOL.

Voting is unthinkable before at least these are added. Heck, throw in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly if a war settings is 'nuff (which apparently it is), and make it even more difficult to choose.

Bridge at Remagen, The
Great Raid, The
Lawrence of Arabia
Sand Pebbles, The
No Man's Land (BOS: Nicija zemlja, SLO: Nikogarsnja zemlja)
Waterloo (1970)
When Trumpets Fade
Young Lions, The

9th Company, The (RUS: 9-ya rota)
Beast, The (AKA: The Beast of War)
Bridge, The (GER: Die Brucke, 1959)
Cross of Iron
Dark Blue World (CZE: Tmavomodry svet)
Downfall (GER: Der Untergang)
Henry V (1989)
Hill, The (1965)
Johnny Got His Gun
Joyeux Noel
Kagemusha
Land and Freedom (1995)
Ran
Richard III (1995)
To End All Wars

Have:
Bridge at Remagen, The
Great Raid, The
Lawrence of Arabia
Sand Pebbles, The
No Man's Land (BOS: Nicija zemlja, SLO: Nikogarsnja zemlja)
Waterloo (1970)
When Trumpets Fade
Young Lions, The

Added all the others still showing there.
Great help here!

Doh!

War and Peace (RUS: Voyna i mir) (1968)

There once was an original russian version, but it was something like 12 hours. The one here is 8 hrs long.

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0063794/

The battle scenes make this the most memorable for me... they used the russian army for thousands of extras. They had all the uniforms made too.

"War and Peace" by Tolstoy, is a book about Napolean invading Russia. It is interwined with a love story which was the dull part for me at 12 years old. That's the last time I saw it.

Thank your lucky stars for the pause button on this one.

I see now that no one on this baord watched any movies older than 2000 with all the votes for Saving Private Ryan, while good, the ones below are much better nad would implore people to expand their viewing to some older classics.

Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece.

Patton is also ridiculously good.

Apocalyspe Now got my vote.
I agree - think its sad that most of these people think SPR is the best movie ever. I love Patton, and it got my vote.

I wouldn't be as disgusted if things like AN, FMJ and Platoon were up there as they are also excellent movies but the old saying is true here, they just don't make 'em like they used to.

You committed a very common logical fallacy as you're comparing the best movies of two decades to the best movies of this year.

Saying "they don't make 'em like they used to" would warrant a comparison to war movies back to the late 80s and that means comparing your list to one that includes Saving Private Ryan, The Pianist, Der Untergang, Schindler's List, Glory, La Vita e Bella, etc.

The original was good at 2.5hrs...

The director's cut was even better at 3.5 hrs...

But when it comes down to it there is only one true form...

Uncut Das Boot FTW--282 minutes of claustrophobic WWII U-Boat goodness.
