I felt Memento was gimmicky and implausible.

Inception had a mind f*ck twist? Nah.

Interstellar had a kick-ass twist, but it wasn't really part of the movie's conclusion.

I liked The Prestige.

Of course, The Sixth Sense belongs here.

I'm not necessarily looking for mind-bending twists, I'm talking about movies that are incredibly cerebral. Thus Inception would fit IMHO.

Interstellar ranks right up there. I also dislike the movie. Not only was the damn audio hard as fuck to hear, but the plot is like -- yeah your image of WTF!

Two old movies I can think of right now are:

City Slickers ("that one thing. That one god damn thing!") Curly had a Bro?! WTF!

and

Day Of The Dead. Did they really take off in the Heli? WTF!

Those are nowhere near mind-bending.

You're really going to say Interstellar isn't "mind-bending?"

I was looking at it as a WTF scenario.

Oh, then definitely Dumb & Dumber. There are so many layers there, the homages to Nietzsche, Kierkegaard and Umberto Eco are so subtle that most people miss them.

Watch Primer and make a chart to try to keep track of who is where and what is happening in each timeline. After 100 viewings you might understand 20% of it.

Watch the Eric Andre Show. You'll be WTF'ing about every 30 seconds.

QFT! HAHA Did you watch last night? Eric had Steve Schirripa crush walnuts in his hand and then Eric got his ass kicked. LMAO! Not to mention the American pasta sauce clip.

Besides 10 Cloverfield Lane. Two other WTF contenders might be Stir Of Echoes and The Mist. I never seen The Mist myself, my Cousin told me about it and it sounderd pretty WTF. Dude in Stir Of Echos was pulling his hair out over the voices. LOL Come to think of it. I haven't seen Kevin Bacon in a film recently.

The Mist was better in writing, the movie had a different ending. It was part of Skeleton Crew.

I wouldn't say The Mist is WTFish. It's standard horror trope. The ending is a bit of a shocker especially since it differs so much from the story, but otherwise, nothing that makes you go WTF. Or..it could be I already knew the story so it didn't have that impact. I thought it was a great adaptation to a great story.

I KNOW there are movies out there not mentioned that are like this, but they are all escaping me right now, as most newer movies are simply 1 trick pony / twists.

Here's a few that might fit....

Triangle
Cube

as mentioned almost anything by Kubric.
Pi
Nothing
Enter the Void
Under the Skin
Coherence
Would you Rather?
John Dies at the End
Sucker Punch
had me 'wtfing' quite a bit, but I wouldn't say it was good.
Night Watch and Day Watch
Endhiran -
Hindi movie where whole movie is WTF badass.

To answer your question about 2010. I recently watched both back to back and did a review in the movies thread. Basically, 2010 on it's own is a decent film if taken by itself. It is in no way as good as 2001, and can seem dated due to the US/Soviet friction that plays a large part in the story, but it isn't a bad movie at all (IMO). It is much more straight forward though, and less wtf, although there definitely some wtf moments as more of the alien aspect is unveiled.

Donnie Darko did not age well at all IMO - loved it when it first came out, watched it again last year and it was terribad.

Part of it also may be repeat viewing. It's not a movie to really repeat view, and if you are going to repeat view, it should be in an inebriated state, preferably herbal-derived. One of many good films for such viewing conditions. Always loved the good cerebral films in those circumstances.

I'd add

13 Sins
The Game
Body Double
Afliction

To the list.

I would not call them quality film making, but are kinda fun to watch.

None of these films f*ck with your mind. They are thrillers. Or horror, or sci-fi, or whatever. With an unusual plot. Or a plot you didn't suspect. Nothing special.

Ns1 mentioned "requiem for a dream". Now that might actually be the only film mentioned in this thread that f*cks with your mind. Although, tbh, I still haven't watched it myself. I have the DVD ready here, next to my TV. I bought it when DVDs were relevant (a decade ago ?). Still haven't been in the mood where I thought: "yeah, tonight I'm gonna let my mind be f*cked".

And Mongrel posts this picture:

And then doesn't mention A Clockwork Orange ?
Now that's a movie where you will think "WTF!!" after you watched it.

My suggestion is Werner Herzog's classic from the 70s "Auch Zwergen haben klein angefangen". In English: "Even dwarves started small". It will probably be hard to find, but it is out there, on DVD and online. Go get it. Don't read anything about it. Nothing. Not IMDB, not the wiki page, not the DVD-cover. Just watch it. It's 96 minutes, that's all you need to know, if you need to plan a timeslot when to watch. Enjoy. I'll give you your money back if your first thought after watching this move is not "WTF?".

Movies by Peter Greenaway are good too (regarding WTF factor). Try to find "ZOO: A Zed with Two Naughts". Drawning by Numbers, The Draughtsman Contract, maybe The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and her Lover too. Don't watch the later stuff, that becomes too over the top, too opera-like.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned David Lynch. Go watch Eraserhead. When you're done, come tell us here what you think the movie is about.

Note, I mention these movies not only because they are WTF-movies. Clockwork Orange, Dwarfs and Eraserhead are all in my personal favorite top-10 list. (Together with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Taxi Driver, Blade Runner, Rumble Fish, Stalker, Gilda, The Hustler, Memento, oops, that's 11 already).

Enjoy.
