Best Mobo/CPU for AGP/DDR400

Hey. Gotta question. I have an older A7N8X-E deluxe + Mobile XP 2600+ @ 2.2GHz... I have been running it at 2.4 GHz for years, but recently a game I got won't run it at that speed, so I had to down clock it to 2.2 GHz.

I'd like to get a fresher Mobo and CPU combo for this rig and use this one for something else.

Question is - what the best mobo/cpu combo I could get to use the hardware I have?

I've got an X800XT AIW AGP and 2 gigs DDR400. I have no desire to upgrade these components so please DON'T even suggest I do so. Thank you.

Either platform is ok with me (Intel/AMD)

I will want to overclock it, because.... that's just what you do. Right?

Something around $300 is what I'm looking to spend.

Are the two gigs a matched pair? If so, then a socket-939 Athlon64 board will make the best use of them, and you'll have at least some choice in AGP boards there.

I'd recommend a DFI LP Ultra D and an Opteron 170,..... should come in right about $300 and OC to 3.0 GHz as long as you have a good PSU. Second choice would be Asus A8N-E and Opteron 170.

Those are both PCI-E boards...

I can't find any AGP - 939 boards. Can you give me some hints?

A friend of mine got that Asus i865PE LGA775 board - P5P800 SE maybe? Seems to run nicely for him with a 940 Hotburst...

Watch out for those that have a faux-AGP slot, like the very first one listed. The ASRock board, while having its quirks, on the other hand is the only one on the market to have TRUE, properly implemented 8x AGP alongside true, properly implemented 16x PCIE. This one will survive your next graphics upgrade when the time for that comes.

Supplies of 939 boards and processors are dwindling, so be quick - everything that came after that used DDR2 RAM.

Get a retail boxed 939 regular athlon 64 single core or opteron dual core before they're all gone. Newegg and mwave have the best selection. And open box boards are available without accessories for around $35-40, but sell out fast. Agp models are harder to find.

Whoops, sorry,... hmmm,.... wonder if you can still find an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum??? Probably not,..... unless you can find something used, I think the only other option is the EPoX EP-9NDA3I, but it is an nForce 3 250 board. Check your local Mom&Pops, maybe there is a leftover AGP NF4 board around.

Its a AGP board (with PCI-E support), supports both DRR & DRR2 (Only 2 DRR slots, hope its 2x1gb you have)

Wont overclock, but hey.. you've got a e6300 ~_~ ... can always ditch the motherboard once you've saved up, get a good overclocker/new memory
