Edit: here are ideas around 225-235 I've found

AMD:
ABIT KV8 PRO w/ AMD ATHLON 64 2800+ $226.00

Intel:
INTEL PENTIUM 4 2.4C ABIT IS7-MB $231.00

INTEL PENTIUM 4 2.4C ASUS P4P800 SE-MB $234.00

Uses are for Photoshop, Maya, Lightwave, also some gaming.

If you do not overclock, the Athlon 64 2800+ has quite a bit of an advantage over a 2.4c setup, with the exception of Hyperthreading, which can make a difference for some applications and scenarios.

But if you are planning on overclocking, a 2.4c at 3.2 for example, is going to be close in performance to the 2800+ overclocked, and still has the advantage of Hyperthreading.

If possible you should really try to find out if Hyperthreading makes a big difference for your intended uses, otherwise the Athlon 64 is probably the better solution.

Tom,

A64 2800's today OC on SHSF to 2500Mhz. The skt 754 PR multiplier is 1.5:1 Meaning an 2500Mhz A64 is creeping up on 3750Mhz P4 (assuming same bus and mem timings). Maybe the pentium will overclock more in Mhz but when an A64 overclocks it means a bit more.

If you want links to these newer A64's AX's overclocks LMK...

I'd be interested in seeing that... I'm looking to buy a CPU and MB in the $200-300 range.

I'm going from a p4 1.6@2.2 hoping to double my performance on the cheap.

would this be the right stepping? http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=19-103-452&depa=0

and this mb i think you reocmmended? http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=13-152-043&depa=0

$212 at newegg. I have a stick of mushkin select cas 2.5 that i will use atleast temperarily. Then see about getting some of that faster cas 2 ddr 400 stuff. in the weeks after...

My only concern is if waiting a week or two for the price cuts would benefit me? And if there might be a better bang for the buck in the 90nm chips or the 1mb s754 chips either now or after the pricecut?

I have a zalman cu7000 to put on whatever i buy... my roomate broke my first one that was on my p4 for a long time so i put the stock heatsink on my P4 and made him get a replacement 7000. i figure now is as good a time as any to upgrade

Thanks,
Peppe

I mentioned overclocking a 2.4c to 3.2, something that has been widely demonstrated to be almost a given ability of a 2.4c. Are you saying virtually all 2800+ are capable of 2500 mhz with minimal effort and expense ?

I was this close to buying that combo, but they didn't have any un-returned boards left and I did expect the board to work, LOL.

BWAHAHAhahahaha, was at Fry's earlier today and they had the P4 3.2E OEM with ECS 848P-A motherboard for $189.99. I bought that and a Minolta-Konica laser printer ($79.99 after instant rebate, no mail-in needed) and after tax paid about $290.XX out the door. Got home and checked Newegg, wanted $215 for the OEM chip that I got for $190 with motherboard. I can throw away the motherboard and still have saved $25. Rock!

Actually, because of my perverted sense of curiosity I'm gonna mess with that ECS board and see what it can do.

I'm saying 2300Mhz is guarnteed with an AX on default Vcore and stock HSF which will beat a P4C @3200Mhz in almost every bench and considerably in gamming. But yes 2500Mhz is trivial as I linked to a thread above these guys are doing it with stock heat sinks and at or about stock Vcore. AX stepped is the key.

That looks great. The AX newcastle is what you want and the chaintech board is da shat for the $. Your choice if you want to wait as I don't know anything about impending price cuts?

I didn't find that link particularly useful. When disussing overclocking there are always people who get great overclocks, which in some cases might be what the average user can expect, but in at least some cases are beyond what is typical.

I disagree. I think the ultimate "bang for the buck" right now is the A64 2800+ or 3000+ coupled with the DFI lanparty UT nF3.

This is an overclocking forum isn't it??? thought so...
