Best Modem For Games??

What 56k modem will get me the pings in games?
I heard the diamond supra was good also the 3com ones too but those are expensive. Is there any preformance difference between internal and external modems?

I would also prefer a hardware modem over a winmodem, also it has to be pci if its internal.

i was a sucker and got the usr gaming modem and ill be damned but that thing is great! i have really crappy phone lines and every modem i have used has only gotten me to 26,400. with the gaming modem on regular setting i can get 37,666. a big improvement. but my ping suffers a little. on the gaming setting it drops to 32,000 but i ping lots better. on my old modems i would ping like 220 on my favorite cs servers, after the gaming modem i could ping like 150. and yes i changed my mtu settings and all that stuff on my other modems. i read somewhere though that the gaming modem is only really effective for those with poor phone lines, and that might be the case with me. i've been really happy with my purchase though.

During the months that I did not have dsl, I bought a cheap 56k PCTel winmodem; it was fine for surfing/downloading, but the pings were ~400.

Then I broke down and went out and got a usr Performance Pro; it has a gaming mode, and my pings improved dramatically, sometimes sub-100 pings.

If you are mainly a gamer, you can add ATFG into the "extra settings" for your modem in the control panel, and it will always default to the gaming mode. This way you can uninstall the funky usr tray icon and not worry about it.

Most modems are optimized for downloading at the fastest rate. The gaming mode syncs at a slightly slower speed in order to guarantee a more stable connection, which really does provide a smoother gaming experience. Even if the pings are not lower, the games are nevertheless smoother, because your connection is consistent, as opposed to the faster settings which would fail from time to time and require the modem to "retrain" with the game server and renegotiate speeds, which happens all the time with regular modem settings.

Sounds like hype, but it really does improve online gaming.

Meanwhile, I'm happy my dsl is back. Nothing beats broadband.

When I used modems I always trusted in zoom. Never used anything else so I guess I'm kinda one sided here. But I always thought zoom modems did what was supposed to be done.

my suggestion is just to give up on modems for gaming. Get a good connection... Cable/dsl/t1... atm... anything but modem

Some of us can't get DSL or Cable, satallite is the only option... but that is even worse than a modem
