Best modern 4x strategy game

I'm looking at a nice 4x game that I can just play a few hours here and there. Fantasy or Sci-Fi are my favortite types. I played Endless Legend a bit and it's pretty cool so far.

Total War: Warhammer, which does not fit the 4x genre, look freaking amazing too, but damn overwhelming.

If you want a RTS with 4x elements, Sins of a Solar Empire is worth a look.

Endless Legend probably. AoW3 is pretty good. Better tactical combat, but EL has much better empire management. Stellaris is out in 3 weeks.

Age of Wonders 3 seems to not get the love it deserves. The world building part is not the deepest thing ever, but it is decent, and the thing this game does which the others don't, is have real tactical turn based battles. It's like Civilization or something (only fantasy and with some differences), but when it comes to combat you don't just click your batch of units on the enemy and watch one win. Instead a battlefield appears and you can control each unit and move them and use their skills/spells etc. It is really good.

I also like the magic.

I liked Age of Wonders 3 quite a lot. Steam says I have 467 hours logged into that game. Which is a far cry from the 1698 hours logged for Civilzation V, for but still extremely substantial.

Endless Legend, I'm afraid to say, bored me. 4X games are definitely my genre, and I'll put a lot of time into most of them, but played Endless Legend was such a chore that I never ended up finishing a game.

I enjoy AOW 3 but nobody else seems to be talking about it much.
Its got all the solid elements from the previous games plus nice shiny 3D graphics. Good stuff.

In my opinion while it's tactical combat does have the edge over Endless Legend, it's empire building is WAY behind which is why Endless Legend gets most of my time.

If we ever got SOTS 3, that would probably be one of the top space 4x games so far. But I am not so sure we ever will.

It's releasing today. I pre-ordered it and will play some tonight. The game look really nice even though i'm far from good at these kind of games.

But i've been hoping for a good space-exploration game and this one seem really cool, especially since I paid $30 with GMG.

Yeah I was tempted to buy it too but I already have AoW3 and all the expansions and I rarely play it :/ I think I played AoW1 and 2 so much that I am kinda burned out. I also enjoyed games like that more when I was younger, lately I don't have the attention span for huge games. Kinda wish I could work out which is the best for me and then I would know to play that one, but there are a lot to choose from these days. It's a good thing but it would take me a long time to play them all and figure out which one I like the most.

Seems like you would enjoy Endless Legend. The learning curve is quite nice and the gameplay is rewarding. Great 4x fantasy game.

Endless Legend has tactical combat as well, it's just not as deep as AoW3. No damage types, etc.

I think Wargame and World in Conflict are among the top in my opinion. I haven't seen anything that came out that could really rival either of those for real time strategy.
