been doing some research. So far i've been looking at the Viewsonic P95+ in black. Are there any monitors that are better than this for graphic design and game playing?

right forum, just not patiant enough.

i have to say that the p95+ is a very good choice; or just about anything useing a that is useing similar tube and comes with a good warranty. ibm, kds, sony, mitusbiti and nec all come to mind but they are really all about the same, just go for the best price and buy from someplace you can return it to easly if you are unfortunate enough to get a defective one.

I'd personally avoid the 95f+b. I have one and it's a complete piece of crap. The text/screen is fuzzy on the edges and it has distortion that is uncorrectable. There is NO WAY to get the edges of the screen to be straight, plus the whole tip is slightly skewed to the right in a curved type line.

I'd avoid it personally. IN fact i'd avoid all viewsonics, the ones coming through here all seem to have some uncorrectable distortion.

A while ago I bought a Samsung SyncMaster 955DF and I like it very much. I think AnandTech did a review on it a while back, so you could check the archives for it.

seriously, the P95F is that bad? I thought viewsonic's professional series were great. Is there any other monitor brand that is better than viewsonic. I've always been happy with them. What brand is better overall than viewsonic?

I would consider an NEC/Mitsubishi also. The NEC/MITSUBISHI FE991SB from dell is $223 and I've heard good things about it. Haven't actually seen on though. My 3 year old 19" died this past Friday and I'm waiting on my new Sony G420S I ordred from Dell. I have seen the Sony and it is nice but more expensive (mine was $333 shipped after discounts and coupons). My next choice would have been an NEC/Mitsubishi.

i have a 955df too and i don't like it too much. i mean i guess its alright for the money b/c i think i paid like $120 for it, but i guess i don't like the fact that i can't get 1600x1200 with 68 refresh rate as the spec says. i'm using a geforce 3 ti200 card and i can't get the refresh rate i would like. i kinda wish i just spent more money for a better monitor.

I've got a NEC 97F 19" I bought from Staples for $269. Excellent text and graphics quality, good geometry. Just stay away from Envision - I had a 985E that I couldn't get the geometry right no matter what I tried. I exchanged it for the NEC.

I currently own a Samsung 900NF and am very happy with it. I'm running it on a R8500 at 1600x1200, 85Hz; colors are rich and text is sharp. Most places have it at about 310-315 before shipping. If that's a bit out of your range ( 270 you said) then the Sony E440 (Black) is the next best thing. Newegg has it with free shipping at 289, which is a great deal. I believe both would be better than the Viewsonic, in that they have both good image quality and excellent text clarity. What resolution do you intend to use?

I just ordered the NEC FP912SB or whatever the hell the model is. When it gets here, I'll let you know my thoughts - And they'll be relevant, since I do graphics design and 3D rendering, and am a total nazi when it comes to color and geometry.

that's an important point. resolutions i like are at 1280x1024 and at 85hz. so whatever monitor can provide me these resolutions at great performance and looks, i'll consider budgeting for.

If 1280 x 1024 (85hz) is all you're worried about, then I think you'd find the sweet spot with a Sony E440 (B). The price isn't much higher than what you were shooting for, and you still have the option to move to 1600 x 1200 and remain at 85hz. Of course, a lot has to do with what video card you use. If it's anything Nvidia, then 1280 x 1024 looks great, but at 1600 x 1200, I'd get a little skittish with anything less than an ATI card, though Nvidia has gone a long way to fix that issue (the not so good old days of the G1 and G2 cards.. ) Good luck!
