Hey we finally cleared our back patio out and it would be great to bbq and hang out there but in my area there are about 1000 mosquitos per square foot. You'll literally get bit 20 times if you take the garbage out.

Are citro candles the best? What about ThermaCELL repellents?

Find the source, and neutralize it. Spreading chemicals around is a half assed bandaid, that pollutes the environment, and doesn't work that well. Get rid of standing water, and make ure you check your rain gutters for drainage.

spray your yard with bifenthrin periodically.

also get the inside and outside perimeter of your house and all of your bug problems are solved.

the citrus-based stuff has found to be the most potent anti-bug compound. And, it seems, that grapefruit has the highest concentration of that specific compound, whatever it is. They not only flee in terror from this stuff, it kills them super dead, as well as noseeums and other nuisance/biting bugs.

not sure if they have a new, marketed product out there that utilizes this stuff, but ah, I don't know, plant a grapefruit tree in your back yard?

Whatever you do, don't waste your money on those clip-on repellent things. They don't do shit.

I see so far that a lot of the suggestions provided are outdoor recommendations.

Any suggestions for indoor?
Whenever I go home, I just take Mefloquine once a week before, during, and after vacation, but it would be nice if I didn't have to.

Deet is temporary and needs to be done every night. We have to fleet our entire room before a few hours before we sleep which will kill 99% of all mosquitos. Waiting 2 hours after one has finished spraying seems to solve the "breathing dangerous chemicals" problem.

We have 3 orange trees planted in our yard along with 2 tangerines, 2 pawpaw, 2 coconut trees, and a few palm trees.
Grapefruit? meh.

all you have to get is a bunch of jumping spiders in your backyard:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_9398000/9398408.stm

"The jumping spider appears to have evolved an affinity for smelly human feet in order to help find its prey"

"When they smell blood, they can launch into feeding frenzies where they kill up to 20 mosquitoes in rapid succession, and not necessarily to eat all of them"

Fucking jumping spiders....<ugh> We have lots of those damned "mini-tarantulas" around here...especially in the garden area. They're pretty good for pest control though, so I rarely kill them.

Been looking at the mosquito magnet reviews at amazon and they aren't very impressive. That's why I didn't buy one several years ago. I my bite the bullet because it's boomer recommended.

But a guy posted this.
There's a much easier way to control mosquitos. Get a bunch of five-gallon buckets, put three gallons of water in them, add some dish soap, and finally spray some WD-40 on the water. Mosquitos will try to lay their eggs in the water, and will get stuck because the WD-40 breaks the surface tension on the water. The dish soap will take care of any larvae that do manage to hatch. Place the buckets around your property (high enough so that your dog doesn't drink the water - won't hurt the dog, but will give it diarrhea from the soap) and check them from time to time. You'll be amazed at the number of mosquitos that get caught.

Thoughts?

Deep woods off - I usually get something with 50% or more deet. I used to be able to find 75% deet from a local sporting goods store, but they no longer carry it.

For kids - I look for the lowest deet content, which is around 9%. Deet is absorbed through the skin and can have negative effects on kids livers. When possible, I try to use non-deet products on kids.

Sounds feasible. It would be better if you could get all the neighbors in on the action too. Take charge, and canvass the neighborhood. If the sketers are bothering you, they're probably bothering everyone else. You might have to buy the buckets for everyone, but that's cheap enough.

?? How are they getting into your house? The only place I've ever had a mosquito problem indoors was at our hotel in Venice. For some reason they don't believe in using screens over there.

edit: Our hotel room looked like the scene from an axe murder by the time I was done killing all the mosquitos.

That's what we're trying to figure out. The mosquito nets used seem to be inadequate and I also get the feeling that they can come through under the doors as well. Every night before we enter to spray the sleeping room, I usually kill about 3-4 that are just sitting on the door waiting for us to open it so they fly inside.
This is our house in Lagos, not the one in the US BTW.

The funny thing is when I go to my grandparents village in the woods, there is zero mosquito and no need to spray the rooms at all.
The difference? No street gutter with standing water.

Ours is about the size of the one in the 1st picture, maybe a little less and it's not as close to our house as what you see in that picture. From my point of view I can't do anything about that breeding ground since it's outside our compound, so I have to stick to indoor methods.
Putting a mosquito magnet outside our compound near the gutter is just asking for it to get stolen, not to mention the Amazon reviews of that product are pretty bad.

I have a wet areas where I live. A little stream, a pond, and lots of trees and grass. Sort of swampy.

My property in the hot summer days would result in literally what he said. Go outside for 20 seconds and you have 20 mosquitos on you.

I bought 2 bug zappers (started off with 1), bigger ones, one that are built for multiple acres.

It didn't really help, but they sure worked very well. They basically have 2 screens surrounding a black light. When mosquitos fly between the screens, they get zapped. There is about an inch between the screens.

When I first ran it, I'd fill up the entire 1 inch gap with dead bugs.. The thing is as long as my keyboard on my desk, so take that 1 inch, 6 inch diameter, long as a keyboard, and that is alot of buggers.

Got sick of cleaning them out every night so I bought another one to atleast make it every other night. Nope, they both filled up and jammed full of bugs every single night.

But it would be thousands of mosquitos killed per night. These reviews on the mosquito magnet were like a few hundred at best.

Bug zapper $20-30 at home depot, mosquito magnet $300+?

Yikes. Buy a bug zapper.

In my case I did not reduce the population any... There is just too much wet, they breed faster than I kill. Maybe I'll bump it up to 4 bug zappers for this year!

That looks like a breeding ground for disease and mosquitos. I'd be buying caulking and foam sealant by the truckload and sealing every little crevace I could find.

Mosquito magnet will do better than a bug zapper that targets all bugs(good and bad, mostly good).

Attracting and killing the female mosquitoes, eliminates your mosquito population.

If it's that bad, then yeah you need to find the source and kill it. You could even call the city and they may come spray your area or locate the source.

Thermacell is incredibly effective as is anything with 50%+ deet. Off has a candle that uses the same stuff in Thermacell and works well.
