I need to replace my 850W PSU Thermaltake ToughPower. Since I don't SLI/Crossfire, I'm considering a 750W PSU. But I what is most important is for PSU to be silent. Unless i put my ear right on the fan... I don't want to hear the fan...

I just found my Thermaltake PSU too loud even running idle.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I think the mostly undisputed #1 quiet psu would be the Seasonic X-750. Check silentpcreview if you want to see some testing info on it.

^ what he said, the fan doesn't even run at up to a ~200W load. To date, it provides the highest efficiency available, with excellent electrical performance as well.

Someone had suggested Corsair and I bought CORSAIR CMPSU-750HX earlier. I guess I was a little desperate and went ahead with the purchase... Looks like newegg already shipped and I'm unable to change order. The other choice is to refuse shipment when it arrives. So my question now is... Is it worth returning CORSAIR CMPSU-750HX and getting SeaSonic X750 Gold 750W instead ? I truely want a PSU that is silent.

Update: I started reading some reviews on SeaSonic X750, and if I want silence... Then this is the PSU to get... I couldn't really find much review on Corsair... Looks like I'll be ordering SeaSonic... Thanks for your suggestion !!!

As much as you may desire it, do you actually need complete silence? Does the PC have any other fans?

I don't own the corsair, but I think you could be pleasantly surprised. The efficiency is only perhaps 1-2% less than the seasonic, but the fan is even larger (140 vs 120mm), although it doesn't actually turn the fan off.

The HX750 is silent until high loads as well. For instance, my HX850's fan spins too slowly to hear even though it's right next to me.

Honestly, even the slightest noise anoys me What is so compelling is that the SeaSonic only turns the fan when needed.. Looks like they are known for having their PSU silent...

This is what I want to avoid.. Noise even when high loads occur. I'm a bit curious why I was only able to find one review for corsair and they didn't even mention the noise level... Most of the reviews for SeaSonic all mention how quiet this PSU is...

Yes, well at high loads, my GPUs are far louder than the PSU could possibly hope to be. Combination of my 5870s rail whine (buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz) and fan speed means the HX850 is never heard.

The Corsair 850HX is equally as quiet as the Seasonic X-750. I think between the seasonic and the corsair, the quality is equal. The 750 will be quieter at very high loads, but you won't be able to hear the difference with a high end video card in the box.

You shouldn't even be buying a 750W power supply if you have no plans to run dual video cards.

I also have a 5870. ATM thermalte fan was anoying me. If after I get new PSU, and I notice noise from 5870 I'd probably look into a GPU cooler. I assume I won't need it... But let's see.

Yes, I was going to go with a 650W but I figured having a little extra for future proof wouldn't hurt... Also, wouldn't a 750W be running with less load and hence less heat ?

IIRC PSU loose efficiency fast when run below 20% of full load, at least I remember reading something like that.

I don't know if it's appropriate to ask this in this thread but noise and efficiency wise I want to ask if I should go with a 650 or 750 supply with my future system.
Specs are: i5-750, 4gb 1.65v ram, msi hd5870 lightning, 2HDD's, x-fi sound card, case with 2 140mm fans and 2 120mm fans, Noctua NH-U12P SE.
I want to go with the corsair hx series, but depending on how much money the efficiency of the seasonic x series my safe and noise I may fork up 50,- for a seasonic.

Actually just to warn everyone. The Corsair HX750/850 are great power supplies, but their idle noise is actually quite high (FOR SILENCE ADDICTS). For normal people I bet they'll consider it very quiet. It's somewhat close to 30dba at idle, but unlikely to change noise signature until very high loads. That could be too high a noise floor for some people.

Well, I'm one of those SILENCE ADDICTS... 30dba is really high... Anything lower than 20dba should be ok with me What's insteresting to me is that seasonic's fan only turns on when it needs to... I'm definitely returning Corsair and getting SeaSonic.

Assuming you have only 2 fans in your system. A 5870 and a HX850. Everything else is passively cooled.

At stock 21% 5870 fan speed and 20% load on the HX850, you will ONLY hear the 5870.

You will NEVER hear the HX850.

So yes, if you intend to run with everything passively cooled, you might hear the HX850 eventually. But you will NEVER hear it above GPU fan, CPU fan, or even watercooled, your pump will likely be much louder.

Considering that you used a Thermaltake PSU, I highly doubt you have any idea what a true silence addict is.

True silence + True performance is physically impossible. The only one I can think is that huge case where everything was heatpipe connected to the case itself, which acted as a huge heatsink. Maybe that would be the only way, but you would still be running under very high temperatures.

Erm, 5870 isn't exactly what you'd call quiet. I would definitely hear the HX850 as the loudest thing in my computer. Right now my hard drive is by far the loudest thing in my system.

You wouldn't but 99% of people who have ever owned a computer would call the 5870 one of the quietest GPUs ever made.

And why are your HDs making noise anyway? Get some SSDs, or a green drive that powers down nearly completely when idle.

Submerging the entire PC in mineral oil is silent, and fairly efficient, not to mention it's one of the absolute coolest looking things on the planet.

I'm using a Zalman ZM850-HP. It has a low speed fan that you can't even hear unless you put your ear within a few inches of it. I powered quad-SLI GTX 295's and a 4GHz i7 with it and it hardly even got warm. SPCR gives the heatpipe Zalman PSU's good reviews as well. Pretty low ripple at high loads and they're very quiet. They're built off the Enhance PSU lines.

Now you're just getting off topic. And if the 5870 was that quiet, than the HX850 would be heard You're obviously not going by silentpcreview standards, which is my bar of excellence. Anyways the X-750 is awesome and should be perfect for his needs.

Also there is a balance between cost and quietness, I'm not gonna spend tons of money just to make a slight noise change. Also just looking at your profile, you use a Caviar Black, which is something I'd never use due to how loud it is.

I don't see how this is pertinent. Mjinz is saying that the 5870 is sufficiently louder than the power supply so the OP likely shouldn't be noticing the PSU much to begin with.

You're saying the 5870 is even louder than Mjinz thinks it is. Doesn't that make Mjinz's point even MORE valid? Because if what you say is true, the power supply isn't what the OP should be worrying about right now...

Actually the 5870 isn't even mentioned by the OP. The OP just seemed to want the quietest psu. All my comments were just about the fact the HX750/850 isn't particularly quiet at idle compared to some other psus.
