I am making a new gaming rig and was wondering what mouse to get? Should I use PS/2 or USB for the mouse as well? I heard PS/2 is capable of a faster refresh rate of (200hz)? Do most gamers play at this speed? thanks

If money is no object then the Logitech Dual Optical or Microsoft Intellimouse V3 with either Everglide Giganta or Ratpad (mouse pads) take a lot of beating for gaming.I find USB is more then adequate .

It all depends on your hand shape and what feels good to you. Run to CompUSA or Best Buy and try out the mice and see how they feel

USB will provide enough for what you need and this way it saves an irq (doesn't matter with irq sharing), and with the optical it eliminates the need to clean the mouse ball and gears (very irritating). I'd say go with either the dual optical from Logitech or with the MS Explorer v.3 as well, depending on the style that you like and feels good for your hand.

Some people swear by the Razor Boomslang. It's not optical but it has wicked sampling rates. Of course I'm more traditional so unless you're mega hardcore any decent optical mouse should suffice, USB or not.

Logitch Dual Optical, MS Intellimouse v3 and of course Razer Boomslang. I myself use the boomslang, however you have to deal with cleaning out the mouse at times. The ultimate gaming mouse for me would be a "Boomslang Dual Optical" but they don't exist, yet anyway

Someone suggested Everglide or Ratpad for a mouemat, I'd like to think the func surface 1030 is superior to that!

I can definitely recommend the func 1030 surface, it is very nice..and large too

I use that and a Logitech Dual Optical mouse, very nice combination.

Personally, I like my old-school Logitech Gaming Mouse. It's exactly the same design externally as the very old logitech mouseman. It fits perfectly in my hand, and I don't mind having to clean it every once in a while (not optical).

I've often considered the boomslang, but I once read a review that was not very favorable, so I've yet to throw down that much cash for a new mouse.... is it actually worth it?

i vote for the Microsoft Explorer w/ the Func 1030 pad.

i used the "everglide" for a while but ultimately switched to the func. i find that the everglide is too hard so it makes an annoying clacking noise whenever i lift my mouse up a little bit and put it down, the func is much softer and quieter.

Isn't this important! Especially in games
When optical mouses first came out, I remember abig issue being in games(especially like Quake). If you pick the mouse up to move it, the optical mouse will detect the movement, even though you don't want it to be detected(because it's not touching the mousepad or whatever). Has this been fixed? Is this what the dual opticals fix?

If this is still an issue, just go with a reguler, ball based, mouse.

it's been my experience that the optical mice don't detect movement unless you're directly on, or just like a 1/4 of an inch above the desk.

as for dual opticals, all they do is increase the resolution. twice the precision w/ twice the lenses.

Just a few things of note. First of all, whoever said that PS/2 connections are faster were lying. I'm sorry to say that I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head, but I can tell you that when I switched from PS/2 to USB, I actually noticed the difference (the same could not be said for switching from an Athlon 2000+ to a 2200+). It's quite nice. Secondly, I've gotta be honest, I would not even consider anything but an optical mouse. I've never used this boomslang, but I don't see how it could possibly be better than what I have. Thirdly, I would recommend either the Ratpadz Mouse Pad or the OCZ (I don't remember the product name) mouse pad. The Ratpad is the best surface that I have used, but I had to get rid of it because it was too small. The OCZ is what I use now, and while it doesn't have the wonderful surface of the Ratpadz, it's absolutely wonderful to be able to move my mouse as much as I want to with little trouble. Fourth, as for picking up, I have had no problems picking them up without moving the screen. Finally, I'll put my vote in for the Microsoft Intellimouse 3.0, with an admission of some bias. I'm 6'9" and I have HUGE hands. I actually find these wonderful mice to be a little small, but they are MUCH larger than other mice I've used. I may hate Microsoft like the plague, but I not only have one of these mice at home, I PAID for one for the office because they're so incredibly easy to use. I'll say this: I'll never go back. IMO, Logitechs are not onl way too small, but they just always seem cheaply made. I SAID SEEM!! I didn't say that they were, but since I was 13 playing on my first computer and the mouse went out and was replaced by a Logitech, I can honestly say that I will never buy one again. They weight about half an ounce and just feel like they could be crushed in my hand. Totally personal opinion, but I wanted to at least mention it.

i use the smooth surface. i don't have the user guide that came w/ my func with me right now but i'm sure that it says something about the "smooth" side being better for optical and the "rough" side being better for ball mice because of the extra grip.

I don't care what you guys say-- I can't frag worth a crap with optical mice. I use one for work, but for my home machine, it's the trusty ol' Logitech Mouseman Wheel all the way. Love that mouse.

Im using the rough side on mine, partially because the image on that side is cooler and because it seems to glide better on rough versus smooth.
