I've seen almost everything on the Oscar list, to be real honest I'd say I enjoyed Grand Budapest more than any.

Birdman was great, but I'd still go GB honestly myself.

Nightcrawler was great also.

But still, I'd put it third.

I'd say all three were great, it's a bit more your personal taste then.

Much better than some years in the past.

John wick was like a video game on rails, no suspense or character development.

Agreed. The movie was fucking terrible. I saw it because of how everyone raved about it, but it was just... boring. The problem is that while the action scenes were pretty awesome, what was in between those action scenes wasn't very interesting.

John Wick gets my vote as the most overrated movie of 2014.

No love for American Sniper?

I'd actually put it at 4th.

Actually lower, there are some weren't even nominated I liked better.

I forgot Whiplash.

Clint's getting repetitive on his directing.

Good movie, but it almost seems formulaic these days, like a Stephen King novel...

Guardians of the Galaxy. I think it is the second best Marvel movie so far.
While I very much enjoyed it, IMO it tried too hard in those certain parts to be funny. To me, it was at its best when it was just being a movie, those forced funny parts to me took away from it.

I just watched John Wick today and loved it except for two points:

Needed more development on the relationship between John and the dog. We needed to see the dog really pulling John out of his hopelessness over losing his wife before it was killed. I found myself agreeing with Theon Greyjoy throughout the movie when he said "It was just a dog" because the dog didn't seem that dear to him before it was killed. Note to filmmakers: If a hero is wronged in a film we really need to feel their pain or it's hard to get on board with their need for vengeance. The speech from John about how much the dog meant to him came too little too late in the film. Example: Mel Gibson in Braveheart had a fantastic reason for seeking vengeance. Liem Neeson in Taken had a great reason to want vengeance. Jonh Wick? Well, it was just a dog.

And the final fight between John and the boss sucked. John is pretty much the baddest ass in the whole film. He has the skills to kill and nobody can stand in his way. He's good but not superman, because we see him get beat up, and this is a great balance. But at the end he tosses his gun away and then has way too much trouble beating up an old man. When he had to stab himself with the knife to get it away from the geezer it just didn't work for me. John shouldn't have had that much trouble with him.

The film plot seems like it may have been changed some in editing. The story didn't flow as well as it should of, and parts seemed tacked on or rushed. The action was great and I love it, but the film could have been so much smarter about it.

John Wick isn't best of anything. sure it's mildly entertaining at times, but hardly more than 7/10.

Same for The Equalizer, there was no real suspense.

I liked it. It was a bit obvious that they
were going to go after the work employees
but I thought it was a good movie

One of the things I really liked was when he went to the lady and her husband asked if he asked for help "No, he asked for permission" He's so badass he doesn't need help

Best Action Movie was Edge of Tommorow for me.

It had no right to be as good as it was.

I agree I was very surprised by how good it was

John Wick delivered exactly what it attempted to deliver. It was a great old school action flick, of the sort we haven't seen in years. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I wasn't sure why he had to bury his gold and guns underneath concrete. An expensive hidden safe would of done just fine. Seemed a little over the top.

Edge of Tomorrow and Nightscrawler were the tops for me, Dawn of Apes was a big let-down, I loved Rise so much and guess I wanted something more like it.

Guess I'm in the minority in this thread- I really really liked Boyhood- way more than I expected to- just came off as very authentic, and was fascinating watching all the characters age over the 11 or 12 years. I also remember liking grand budapest hotel, though it was not very memorable.

I'm actually about to go watch Guardians now for the first time- I generally do not like comic book/action hero movies, but I've heard so much good about this one, figured I should see it.

Can't wait to see John Wick, Bird man and night crawler.

American Sniper has only been nominated for six Oscars and the movie made 30.5 million opening day. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-shocker-american-sniper-764330

Where's your logic?

Yeah and Boyhood received a tonne of nominations and made a huge amount considering the screens it showed on. Does not make it any less of a piece of shit.

Lots of garbage gets nominated and/or makes a lot of money, does not make them good.

Can't believe I am debating movies with you of all people though.

Eh, calling it a piece of shit I think is overboard...clearly not your kind of movie...but overall overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics as well as 87% of the audience/8.3 on IMDB

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/boyhood/

Did you see it? It was awful. It's getting a free pass for the technique involved, as an actual narrative film it is garbage. It is totally being lauded for two things, the technical stuff, and nostalgia for people who grew up in that time.

I wanted to love it since Linklater is one of my all time favourite directors, but man, it was a struggle to even make it through Boyhood.

I did see it- I *really* liked it - from a couple posts ago

I actually was worried w/ the length but, for me at least, it never felt overly long or that it was dragging

Ah, sorry man, that post was right above mine.

I guess you just connected with the characters. I didn't at all even though certain things were reminiscent of my own life. I found both of the children to be awful actors and there was way too much cheesy nonsense for me, with references shoehorned in very painfully. Some really poor writing in parts too, I mean that construction worker who comes back later in the restaurant? I watch a lot of movies and that was probably the worst individual sequence I saw all year.

Anyway, glad you liked it, but it did work for this Linklater fan.

John Wick.
Out in the UK at the start of April.
Currently available for digital streaming in the US.
Hint: I won't be waiting over 5 months for this to hit the cinema here, and 3 months after it's available to stream in the US. If you won't let me pay for it at a reasonable time (not like there's dubbing required...) then I will take that as you telling me you don't want me to pay for it.
It's 2015. This sort of crap shouldn't still be going on.
