Look at the welds on the interlooking piping..just art.

Altho it is odd how hte turbos are located all the way near the tail pipes.

That is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Custom-fabbed everything. That thing was not cheap to build. But if you have to ask "Why spend $XYZ on that...you could buy a Porsche?" Then you just don't get it.

I'll bet that thing is fast. I don't like rice. This car is not rice. It doesn't look all that far from stock...unless you're peering thru the grill.

I'd rather have a 240Z w/ a Chevy small block. A nice detuned NASCAR motor would work alright. I've seen a guy w/ a Mustang running a Roush motor that spins 9k and his is lasting okay on the street/strip. Imagine in a car with a little less weight. I've seen a 240Z with a Chevy small block, so I know it'll fit easy enough.

Makes me think of the Focus w/the Cobra motor in it. It's all about power-to-weight-ratio.

Actually this is probably the best Z ever.

I hope they strengthened the frame. Z's use unibody construction that can barely hold together with a 200hp i6.
False. The Z unibody can handle 400+hp without any strengthening except a strut brace. I have done several V8 Z conversions. I will be test fitting a 400hp LT1 into my '82 280ZX this weekend to make sure I have the motor mounts right.

The body work is absolutely amazing. A shame they put those ugly wheels on such an outstanding vehicle.
It is a necassary evil unless you use spacers.

God I can only imagine the wiring on a motor like that... Such an advanced engine from a luxury car, just tossed into a Z, I wish there were more details on the install

Wow. :Q You obviously know what you're doing and have access to metal fabrication tools, various welders and such. Lucky guy. Are you using the 6-speed Vette tranny too? You'd have to have a GM rear axle, custom driveshaft etc.

If you don't mind me asking....$$$?

Actually it doesn't take a lot of fabrication. Just the motor mounts and the tranny mounts (you can buy these from MSA, John's cars, or get templates from JTR. I may actually go automatic I haven't decided yet. Most people would say that is stupid but haven't driven with that kind of power. I used a T56 in the last one and it was somewhat annoying. As far as the rear end the Datsun rear can be used with a modified driveshaft.

Engine swaps not including the "while I'm at it" generally cost between 3-10K depending on the motor.

Here is a guy with a LT1 280zx that explains the process a little.

You can see the turbos in this pic.

I guess there wasn't any room in the engine bay for the turbos, so they put it out back. But that must create some lag since it will take longer for the turbos to spool..but then again..when you have 4.5L, it doesn't really matter

SBC's are the normal choice for Z swaps, I guess this guy just wanted to be different. And it showed...the car is rolling ART. Those welds are ART!

I wanna see a 3L VQ30DE in a Z or 510. It would seem like the perfect engine: physically compact, lightweight, capable of high revs, strong internals for up to 400whp, smooth, and reliable. I guess the only problem is finding a RWD version of the VQ30DE.

fredtam: got pics?? I'd be really interested in seeing some as I love Z's.

I'll have some as soon as I start the bodywork. I plan on documenting everything this time to help others out. I had some pics of my 300zx with a SBC before I added EFI up but I can't remember if I took them down or not. I'll search for the thread.

How heavy is the SBC compared to the L26 or the VG30DETT?

You gain about 200-300lbs going to a SBC but there are ways to lighten things up. The extra weight actually improves handling.

Hey lay off NFS4, he's a dash-stroker, not a technical grease monkey like us

fredtam: isn't 200-300lbs increase a lot considering the car only weighs about 2600lbs to begin with? How would it improve handling if it loses its weight balance?
