i have a dell inspiron 5100, and it overheats a lot and shuts down...i am looking to buy a notebook cooling pad; i've searched sites such as newegg, amazon, but the best deals seem to be on meritline.com....however, there are no user reviews there....i heard some cooling pads push the air, and some pull the air away and depending on the fan of the notebook itself this could cause a vacuum if u get the wrong one, and it will not help at all....any feedback if appreciated...my budget is less than $30...thank you

Yeah, and by vacuum what it means that it sucks air away from the notebook bottom forcing the hot air away and cool air in. Do some research, don't wait to be led by the hand.

vacuum = the notebook fan blowing air out at the same time as the cooling pad is blowing air in....but nice try trying to sound smart though

No you idiot, a vacuum is the absence of air. If the cooling pad is blowing air towards the laptop and the laptop is blowing air out it isn't a vacuum because there's no absence. However if the fans on the cooling pad are blowing air away from the laptop (i.e. out the bottown of the cooling pad) you are creating a low pressure zone between the notebook and the cooling pad. Due to this low pressure zone, air moves to fill it thus supplying the pad with new cool air to replace the air that has been heated from the bottom of the laptop.

You want help, ask nicely, but when someone spoon feeds it to your dumb ass then accept it or go someplace else. Don't try to act cute and call me an idiot when you clearly down understand how the concept/device works and I OWN it and have therefore experience how it works first hand.

woah b4 this thread gets crazy:

*Putting on my Mod Hat*

Calm down people, no need to get worked up. Its a concept of mis understanding that is all

*throwing the mod hat back on the shelf*

Okey, what the OP is trying to say is when you have your notebook fan sucking, and the antec notebook cooler is also sucking, you have 2 fans sucking in the oposite direction.

This will cause a vacuum. However not to the degree where it will be like space and your internals will explode do the lack of pressure on your surroundings.

The ANTEC cooler is very good. The only draw back is that its limited on notebooks smaller then 15inches, and its kinda bulky. But it does make a noticiable reduction on the notebook temp.

I hope this clears everything up.

Op think of it this way.

The Antec will draw hot air away, forcing the cold air to go under. The cold air then is imediately forced into the notebook while the hot hear leaks out and gets exhausted.

Does this make sense now?

so you're trying to say that no matter which cooler it is, whether it is sucking air or pushing air in, doesn't have to depend on what time of fan is in the notebook because it will still get the job done?

what's wrong with these then? cheaper than the antec and with free shipping:
*****/notebook-cooling-pad-2-fan-210.html
*****/15-4-laptop-cooling-pad-2-quiet-fan-2-usb-hub-black.html

which one of those two is the best one to get

in most laptop cooler its noise concern.

You want something with good fans yet wont produce a lot of noise.

The other stuff is all pointless.

You want movement down there so you either force cool air to go under, or to push air up.

dont know how else to help you.

the coolers all work the same.

the difference in price is due to the quality of fans or the brand name

thats all i can say. :T

I have an Antec: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16834999850

and a Belkin: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16834998314

The Antec is fine, but it is a bit loud for my tastes when it is on high. On low, it's not too bad, and it seems to have a fairly solid build. That said, I generally prefer the Belkin. Though it's a bit light-weight in comparison and only has one fan, it seems to cool fairly well, and it is nearly silent. I have no problem using a 17" laptop either...the rubber pads are nice for keeping things in place.

thanks for your real help Bleeding Jawa, but both of those have too many bad reviews for me...also this helps:
"the coolers all work the same.

i guess nobody knows anything about those that i tried to link on meritline, so i will probably have to order one of those since they are the cheapest and have free shipping

I've got the Antec - $15 AR from Fry's. Great notebook cooler. I have NO idea about those on Meritline, but it looks like you've made up your mind even before writing this thread.

BTW - it sounds like both those coolers on Meritline may actually draw air away from the laptop, reading the descriptions. But the prices sound good. Post a review and let us know your thoughts when you receive it. Good luck.

Sorry aigomorla for getting a bit heated.

OP, i don't know how to state this any more than I and everyone else have tried. I own a Dell Precision M70 which is a laptop with a 15.4" screen, much like the Inspiron 5100 that you own. Using the Antec cooler I saw my temperatures drop significantly and would wager that the same would happen for you. Reviews can be biased or depending on the notebook used not shed the right light on the equipment.

I can say that spitting in the face of people who are trying to help you, from a regular member all the way up to a mod makes you sound like a whiny kid.
