Does this CPU come anywhere near i3 performance for gaming when OC'd?

if you run it at about 4500Mhz it performs generally similar (or a little under) something like a Core i3 4330. For the price it's a nice deal..but the Hyper Threading would be missed. For $90 though, I can't see how someone would get anything else. The enthusiast may bark at the Z97 chipset motherboard..but NON-Z overclock boards are out there if it became that big of an issue.

At 4700 Mhz, it beats a 3MB 3.5 Ghz Core i3 in several games.

NOTE: In all fairness though there were some gaming benchmarks from the PC lab review where the 3MB Core i3 did beat the OC Pentium 3258 (I did not post those however)

However, with that mentioned, I don't know if the stock cooler (Intel copper base model, rated at 95 watts) will give a person that high of an overclock.

In this post---> http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=36506942&postcount=18

Hexus got 4.4 Ghz @ 1.2 volts with the stock 95 watt cooler using a 3258 ES

Here is another post reporting 4.4 Ghz with stock cooler---> http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=36511126&postcount=41

4.7ghz is a major push on a stock cooler, with a local MC I'd rather spend the extra $40 and get a i3 with HT that I don't have to mess with at all

The following i3-4130 is only $30 more than the $60 Pentium 3258 at Micro Center:

http://www.microcenter.com/product/419424/Core_i3_4130_34GHz_LGA_1150_Boxed_Processor

However, it is slower than the i3-4150 used in the tests I linked.

Good question is at what Mhz does a Pentium 3258 need to be at in order to be equal to i3-4130?

I'd say a good deal lower than 4700Mhz.

I have gotten my G3258 to 4.4GHz with an H55 closed loop cooler at 1.3V. Didn't experiment beyond that but it stayed below 70c over 24 hours of prime95 so I'm sure there's more room, especially with a better cooler.

And even though there is a copper slug in the stock cooler, the cooler itself is such a joke. All Intel coolers are a joke. I remember my i7-920 in 2008 couldn't even run 24 hours of prime95 at STOCK settings without throttling! Somehow they thought these crappy radial coolers are going to dissipate 130w? I don't think times have changed. They bet on people not running hours on end of CPU intensive applications, but when they do, the performance gets cut by throttling. Any aftermarket or closed loop cooler resolves this.

Back to the G3258. It's a fun chip for $60, but definitely not fast. My i3-2100 is about the same speed at stock settings, and you can get one of those for about the same price used.

The problem with that plan is that there are no bundle deals for the cheap i3 cpus. You would need to pay full price for a board and the cheapest 1150 board is $53.

The i3 4360 can be had in a bundle, but the bundle deal only takes $40 off the motherboard. The i3 4360 and the Z97 PC Mate is over $200.

Come on, the regular price for the Z97 PC Mate board is 109, but when you get it in a bundle with the Pentium the total is only 99, and there is a $10 rebate too. Think about it, you get a discount on the board, a rebate, and a free cpu. How can anyone complain? This bundle price is insane.

Got mine, along with an Gigabyte MicroATX mobo (Newegg deal), for $80, and with an old H50 Corsair acetate cooler I had in my junk box I'm able to hit 4.6GHz with stability. I added a used 2GB AMD 7850, 8GB of RAM, a cheap Kingston 120GB SSD, Logitech K400, a Chromecast, and installed Ubuntu on it. This is going to be a great little living room HT/gaming PC.

Hmm, anyone willing to work out a deal? No BM store near me. I don't want the board, just the CPU. Don't even really need the stock HSF. shoot me a pm if anyone's making a trip.

I'm glad you got such a good Non-Z overclock. (Was it with the Gigabyte H81 or B85?)
