Best OC on a FX-55 San Diego?

Well with the release of the FX-57, the SLI/all out gaming system I've been "building" for the past 4 months has been prolonged AGAIN. Of course the A8N-SLI Premium and the 7800 GTX haven't helped....along with several other product releases that seemed to take forever, but overall I'm happy they have come out because now I'm even more excited to finish the build. Well what I'm wanting to know now is what is the best overclock on a FX-55 San Diego that you've heard of (can link me too maybe?) or have done yourself. I've seen 3700+'s running @ a little over 2800 mhz (air) on other threads, so that leads me to believe that a 90 nm FX-55 could hit 3 ghz no problem. Or even better yet if you happen to stumble across this thread once the FX-57's are shipping, I wouldn't mind hearing about the OC on that =]

Thanks...

Oh yeah, anyone know or heard any rumors if there will be a "Ultra" or something in the 7800 series (something above the GTX)?

I would say neither...get the 3700+. With some more exotic cooling, which will still save you money compared to a stock FX-55, you can easily bump the Sandy 3700 all the way up to 2.8ghz. That would be FX-57 speeds for less than half the cost. Of course, the FX-55 can overclock past 3ghz with some nice cooling, so it's up to you.

hmmmmmmmmmmm......well i was just planning on using my xp-90 for cooling, I think that should do well enough with a 92 mm vantec tornado on it (hooked up to a fan controller of course)....I dunno I just really wanted one of the FX series chips since I've had (or built for friends) plenty of other a64's in the past, and wanted to finally build a system to "end all systems" for myself (i sold 2 a64 systems to come up with enough cash for this SLI rig), and for some reason I just really want to make sure that I can get it past 3 ghz and have it run without a problem.

Anyone that has seen the developments since April on the A8N-SLI Premium will understand the pain i've gone through debating on whether to wait or buy or wait or buy.....and then the 7800 and fx-57 come out! :Q

....oh and yes, I have considered one of the dual cores, but I am a big gamer at heart and that will be the focus of this system, hence my decision to stick with a single core....but then there is also the choice between the 7800's @ $600 a pop or the asus 6800 gt's @ below $400 that I've always wanted.....

best o/c on an FX-55 is a little higher than 4.0 ghz but that's with some awesome cooling...

3.0 ghz isn't impossible with air cooling... especially the san diego 55's...

from what i've read, the best bang for the buck (if you can even call it that) high end chip is the FX-55...

I know the list seems excessive, I was just pasting the "check list" I already had running because I'm lazy........I have a LOT of the parts from older systems (like the HD's and all the optical drives/cabling/etc). The more I cruise around different forums and look at reviews, the more I just want to get a FX-57 and a couple of 7800's and be done with it.....money isnt the biggest constraint here so whatever.

Personally I would just get the SD FX-55 if I were you, so you could finally put together your comp.

Thats a KILLER rig your planning, im jealous =)

If you want the box to end all boxes, you better get 7800s. You'll get better frames with 2x7800 and a 3700 or 4000 than with 2x6800 and an fx, and depending on which chip you choose it would probably cost less.

If you want it to be fast in the future, I'd get X2 and some good cooling. In a year or so, 2 processors will be way more beneficial than a single one running 200-400 MHz faster.

thats a good point........but from what I looked at benchmark wise I thought the X2's were still getting beat in games by the FX's....back to the drawing board I guess

lol thanks....

Well at this point I think I'm just going to hold off until a little into next semester or so and keep working a bunch over the summer, because I think there will be some more refined 7800's that will come out (just like what happened with the 6800 series.....or at least ones that have better heatsinks and stuff), and the prices and availability on the X2's/7800's/etc will level out a tiny bit I think.

Either way, anyone have other suggestions to the parts list I mentioned before? ..thanks again for the input.

My FX-55 San Diego is happily running along @ 3087 (257*12) @ 1.56v. Its being cooled with water (MCW6002, (2) Maze4 blocks on my 6800GT's, BIP3 rad, and AquaXtreme 50Z pump). Idle temps are about 38 and full load about 50.

Absolutely agree. Best bang for your buck there. The 3700 can easily do FX-55 speeds on air.

well given the poll results and the comments i've seen out there across various forums/reviews, i'm starting to really consider the X2 as an option.....gah too many choices..now I think I might just go into another waiting period and see what happens and whats released.
