Opinions? Personally, I'm a fan of the stuff after they started to suck.

My top picks (In no particular order)
Orion
Unforgiven
Unforgiven II
Sanitarium
Slither
Wherever I May Roam
The God That Failed
King Nothing
Nothing Else Matters
My Friend of Misery
Master of Puppets (S&M version, MoP version is too flat sounding)
Whiskey in the Jar (YAY FOR IRISH DRINKING SONGS)
Fixxxer
Astronomy (Blue Oyster Cult cover. Better than the original. Best song EVAR)

The absolute lowest point? St. Anger. Can we just unrelease that album?

NO Metal Militia? Trapped Under Ice? Ride the Lightning? Creeping Death?

You're no "REAL" Metallica

*About St.Anger...Lars drumming is from past albums (but with different acoustics and pitch) but I likes it.

My favorite Metallica Songs aren't even Metallica songs.

Breadfan
Green Hell
The Small Hours
Am I Evil

Those are my favorites.

As far as original material, it's all about Whiplash, Fade to Black and One.

Umm.. you high man? Puppets was the Sh!t. Justice was okay.. but when I practice on my drums along with master of puppets.. my arms go numb. That's a heavy a$$ deep album. Nothing really compares to it.

To each his own, but it's funny you mention heavy and deep because And Justice For All is one of the angriest metal albums ever written in my opinion. Right after the loss of Cliff Burton, problems with the band, and finally, the release of all that stress: "And Justice for All.' To me it's a more powerful album.

WOW, I didn't think I would ever hear anyone say that. I have all the CDs upto and including the black album (which BTW is not in my collection, it makes a nice fish tank ornament)

Dammit, my entire list is moot. I magically managed to NEVER listen to the older stuff on decent speakers until now. Difference is tenfold.

Some random old Kenwoods > PC Tincans. Oh well.

I'd agree with that. It was a very dark album. Not dark in a shock-jock Eastern European Death Metal band way....just overall a not "happy" album.

There was a lot of bitterness and anger that went into making it and it's much different than anything else they put out. It was still Metallica...just not like their other albums.

Justice was an album with anger... but misplaced. Their whole thought process was nihilistic. They really didn't care about anything. Justice had absolutely NO BASS line in any song. I mean tell me how Damage Inc was less "angry" than shortest straw?

It isn't. That honor goes to St. Anger.

Anyway...

For Whom the Bell Tolls
Disposable Heros
Dyers Eve
One
And Justice For All
No Remorse
Anesthesia (just freaking sick)
Eye of the Beholder
Hit The Lights
Master Of Puppets
Battery
The House That Jack Built
The Outlaw Torn
The Unnamed Feeling.

Those are the ones that jump to mind for me.

I like all the well-known ones but I must say I love putting AJFA on repeat. That's 9 minutes of good stuff while driving.

And most of you missed Creeping Death. Unnamed Feeling also deserves a good mention.

Creeping Death
Fight Fire with Fire
Trapped Under Ice
Fade to Black

To Live is To Die (really a beautiful song, and the lyrics Cliff wrote for it are very nice indeed)
One

Nothing Else Matters

Until It Sleeps
Hero of the Day

Where the Wild Things Are

Those are their better songs IMHO
