Best Office replacement for Vista?

Hi there,

I've a new computer with Vista Ultimate on it, and I've transferred a lot of archived documents made in various Office versions, from 97 to 2003...

I am not buying Office 2007, so what's my best choice for a free software suite that would be able to read and create .doc files, and the occasional .ppt ?

I also has to be Vista compatible....

I would give OpenOffice a look. I use this exclusively for all my documents now.. and the price can't be beat.

Dang, beat me too it. OPENOFFICE is amazing and free....and it syncs with MS Office apps.

Look past everything else lol.

OpenOffice is really your only legitimate free alternative, but if compatibility with the 97-2003 Office formats is a high priority, you'll want to stick to Office. 2003 works with Vista, I believe; I'm not sure about earlier versions.

Thanks! Good to know OpenOffice is fully usable in Vista. I checked the main page, and they indicate one would be able to open older Office files and save them again in .doc or .ppt format...

Yeah, you should be able to save old (or new) documents using the standard Office file formats.

There's also Google Docs and a few other online office type things. They're good for some stuff, but still generally sub-par, but figured I'd mention them in case you weren't aware.

IBM Lotus Office is for free on their website.

OpenOffice gets my vote. For me, the killer feature is built-in "save to pdf"
