Hello All

What is the best site for doing online storage/automated backup?
(for critical business data, not personal stuff)

Reliability is the absolute #1 concern for me, not cost.
I think they should have redundant copies of the data at different sites around the world, etc.
Also, hopefully they will be a stable institution, not the cheapest fly-by-night operation.

Also, bonus if they have nice software to easy do automated backups etc.

Thanks for your advice!

I personally use Jungle Disk. They sell the software that runs on your computer (I think it's like $20) and your files are uploaded to Amazon.com's S3 service (they aren't going anywhere). The prices are really reasonable, and it's a "pay for what you use" scale, where I think it's 10-15 cents per gigabyte (prices on their website). The only downside is you need a jungledisk account AND an amazon.com S3 account so I don't usually tell it to my non-tech friends unless I'm going to set it up for them (which is a no). carbonite.com is another one I've heard lots of good things about and they charge something like $50 per year for (i think) unlimited data storage.

I just found both of these a few months ago and have been really surprised at how low the prices have gotten for online storage. It wasn't that long ago that places were charging $50/month for 10GB of storage. That was a non-starter for me, but now I love the ability to have "easy" offsite storage.

[PS sorry for the infomercial ]

Wow that Carbonite deal isn't bad. I wish my cable modem wasn't capped at 384Kb/sec upload, though! 50GB = 12 days of continuous uploading.

BTW, the jungle disk cost is
$2.00 / month for the software +
$0.15 / GB / month for the storage +
$0.10 / GB uploaded +
$0.17 / GB downloaded +
$ a couple cents per month for upload / download requests.

I just went with jungle disk/Amazon S3 for my personal photos. I don't think there was a monthly fee for the software but I'm still on the trial. Just $20 up front fee or the plus version for an additional $1 per month. The plus would do block backups and web access I think. Took me about 2 days to upload my 20GB of photos and that cost me $2.00 for the transfer fee. The rest should be 15 cents per GB for a total of $3 per month. At some point it would probably be cheaper going with Mozy or Carbonite. But, I'll just revisit when that happens.

Another reason I went with Amazon S3 was my photos are on network drive. I read that you couldn't backup network drives with the others I was looking at. Or you'd have to pay more.

Also, the fact that it's Amazon helps regarding reliability and longevity as a company.
