No it doesn't...

what kind of apps would you be using that require the POS that is Win9x?

I was dual booting 98SE and XP for awhile, because my old MP3 player wouldn't work with XP, but eventually, I upgraded to something that wasn't produced during the roman empire.

oh, to add... I use XP Home (home), XP Pro (home/work), and XP 2003 (work) all on a daily basis. as a user, I don't see a major difference between any of them, outside of increased networking capabilities the higher you upgrade.

XP 2003? Do you mean Windows Server 2003?

I also want to add that I've actually had far fewer problems with 98 (not se) than I have had with XP Home.

erm, yes, Server 2003 it somehow becomes XP 2003 in my head, since it uses the same style of GUI by default.

I upgraded to XP the same week it came out. Only issues I've ever had with it have been from hardware that was designed for 9x systems... I find it to be significantly faster and significantly more stable. I leave my XP Pro system up for weeks at a time; with the 9x systems, BSOD was almost a daily issue.

xp pro has a few customization options that aren't available in home, such as dynamic disks (software striped drive arrays), some log-in / ui controls (control userpasswords2), more networking abilities, comes with IIS (albeit only small xfer ability)...

downlow: XP Pro is more tweak-able than Home.. and you can run software striped drive (pseudo RAID 0 with similar performance) without need for hardware RAID conrtoller... I am doing so and it's definitely a good way to use some extra IDE drives you might have laying around..

LOL!

Seriously XP Pro here. Runs everything, except maybe old games, but I wouldn't know, since the oldest thing I play is Diablo 2.

Command & Conquer Red Alert, Win95 edition.
It crashes because it can't find something it needs in the WinXP kernel32.dll file, and compatibility mode makes no difference, as it looks at the same kernel32.dll file.

But that's the only "recent" game I've tried that is that picky.
DOS games won't give me sound, mainly because I don't think that there are DOS drivers for nForce2 sound.
If you want to play old games, put together a system with old components and a good ISA soundcard, and install Windows 95 OSR2.1 or 2.5 on it; maybe Win98SE.

Otherwise, for modern games, WinXP. Most people probably recommend XP Pro because it's simply more capable than the Home edition.

but, i do play old games right now

....new games run just fine on 98se too, no problems here.

Just what do you play that requires you to use a hopelessly out of date OS such as 9x?
The oldest game I play(not counting NES/SEGA MS emulators) is Doom.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit..

xp pro is a blown up version of home. so basically, there are programs constantly running during xp pro that dont run on home. Thus making it a bit quicker and more nimble. The pro version gives you a few additions that some people use. I never used it.... so i sold my pro version and got home. It does just fine for me. Besides, if you use a ms product for your productivity software your asking for trouble anyway.... i use mandrake/debian. Im learning debian now, so i would say for normal windows apps i would use linux, much much quicker and much less bs you have to deal with. I just need a bigger drive to partition it up better. 80 gigs aint big enough anymore....

I find XP to be much more compatible than 2000. 2k wasn't meant for games I'm afraid. I think there is a tiny bit less overhead, though, so there might be a small performance gain. Does anyone know of any games that will not run under 9x?

...but the topic of the thread is "Best OS for gaming right now..." Linux can be used for OpenGL games natively and DirectX games with WineX. However, Debian would probably not be the best choice as a gaming Linux platform, since it is geared more towards high stability than new hardware support. Gentoo would be a better choice.

oh yeah, another vote for XP (Home/Pro) as the best gaming OS right now...

Oh yeah, If you play DOS games in Windows XP, make sure you download VDMSound. It's the only thing that let's me play the original system shock and ultima underworld properly without having a DOS based OS installed. Oh yeah, XCom too.
