Have a BIC F12 sub, and a decent/old Onkyo receiver. 50/50 TV music usually basic news, various sports, documentaries and such, music is usually instrumental/religious/gospel.
Edit: Room is probably around 15 foot square (ceiling is "vaulted", slopes up from TV wall), seating is maybe 10-12 feet to screen/speakers. Fairly wide open on two walls (one to kitchen one open to entry).
Just downsized from house to apartment, left a decent built in sound system (but took sub and receiver). Plan is to build a new home, so apartment is for ~1 year.
Need a 2.0 to replace crap TV speakers, but not much spare monies. Just bought a $40 pair of Onkyo bookshelf speakers...they're garbage. Actually worse than the TV speakers, because the volume fluctuates with the frequency of sound (and overall low volume). No idea what that's about.
Is it worth it to try to craigslist/ebay used speakers (not the slightest clue what to look for)? Better to go for towers or bookshelf? The sub can handle anything below 120Hz.
