I'm looking to buy a party boardgame for a group of about 8-10 adults. Roughly gender balanced. Nothing super geeky, just something to pass time when people get together. One catch is the fact that the majority of the people in this group are 1st generation indian or chinese immigrants, and their knowledge of American pop culture is rather low.Cranium was kind of fun, but we repeatedly ran into songs/people/things that no one in the group had ever heard of.

Would apples to apples satisfy this criteria? If not, Any recommendations?

Games like Trivial Pursuit have different questions depending on where you buy them. You could probably find an English language Trivial Pursuit with Indian or Chinese questions in their respective countries.

Another idea would be a game like Dingbats. It's not trivia, but puzzles and word games.

If you want a fun non-trivia game, we've recently had a lot of fun playing Monopoly Deal, a Monopoly-based card game that is much faster-paced than Monopoly.

Catchphrase is always a lot of fun, and is more fun with more people.

Apples to Apples can be fun when played with the right crowd and enough booze.

The name game, kind of trivia but it works as you add more players. You split into 2 teams, each player writes famous names (fictional or real) on small squares of paper. The more you write the better (good to have 100 or so names). Toss in a bowl and each player then has to make the rest of the team guess the names one at a time. You are NOT allowed to skip a name. The names should be famous enough for both teams to have a good shot of knowing it (a historian can't just toss in Darius I, a nerd can't toss in Admiral Piett from Star Wars... unless most players are historians or SW nerds!).

monopoly, but dont be a super stickler about the rules, and dont get that digital version that certainly must take the fun out of the game.

My personal favorite party game is Catch Phrase. Though since it involves words, I guess there could be some words that non-English speakers wouldn't know very well, but none are really pop-culturey or anything. Apples to Apples involves words also, and I do think there will be many in there that they might have no clue what they are, as a lot are US-specific things (plus I think Apples to Apples isn't very fun in general unless everyone in the group is drunk).

You are nuts, Apples to Apples usually ends up being hysterical. Once the adjective was "chunky" and I thought I had it made by submitting "festering wounds", but another player topped that with something even funnier. I was practically crying on that round.

I second apples to apples. Can be easily turned into a drinking game as well.

Did you guys read the OP? Apple to Apples is heavily reliant on US culture and celebrities. I love the game but it would definitely not be for his target crowd.

I would not describe it as heavily reliant. But, as I already warned, some of the cards are celebrities. If the players have limited knowledge of English, it might cause some vocabulary problems, but then again, the adjectives all have 3 synonyms on the card, so it might be a learning opportunity.

8-10 people?

2 games of Monopoly with the top two from each going to a winners table and the bottom 2 hitting the consolation game.

That way you don't have to worry about players dropping out early and twiddling their thumbs for a couple of hours with no hope of playing again.

I've played that way and it works pretty well.

Yep, nothing like having Dust when somebody calls Dusty.

Thanks for all the suggestions.Language isn't really an issue; most of the people are near-fluent in english. Looks like some good suggestions and split opinions on apples to apples.

I did some poking around and the game Balderdash looks like it could be fun. Has anyone here ever played it?
