Try fluxx. It's easy to learn, as you make up the rules as you go (and they're all written on the cards. If want something a little longer, munchkin is great too. Both games will get a bit messy with 8-10 people, but a slightly smaller group would do well.

If you want a trivia game that's more fun than Trivial Pursuit, try Wits and Wagers.

If you want a trivia game that takes the good from Trivial Pursuit and removes the crap (dice rolling, having to answer meaningless questions to get to one that matters, having to answer a question in every category when you're on the right spot), try Bezzerwizzer

If you want a game that's all about knowing your friends, try Say Anything (you have to guess how they would answer a question)

Apples to Apples is good if none of them have issues with English

Time's Up is awesome, but probably wouldn't work well if they don't know American pop culture or literature or US-centric history.

taboo can be really fun. you allow them to use their native language but no direct translation allowed. because in their head they dont see the word on the card they sometime unintentionally blurt out direct translations. fun stuff.

That game is fun and quick but man you can get blown away by somebody who knows a random bit of trivia. I happened to know when Casablanca was made and raked in, nobody could touch me.

We usually have a bet limit of 12 per round (your 2 "free" markers + 10 chips to split between them - if you have 10 chips that is) to avoid that problem.

For those who aren't familiar with the game - Wits and Wagers is a trivia game where all of the answers are numbers. Everyone secretly writes their answers on a card, then the cards are arranged in order from lowest to highest. You bet on who you think is closest without going over, with payouts increasing the farther you are from the middle. You also get a few chips if you wrote down the "right" answer. Games are quick - 7 questions per game.

Damn, I don't know any games for 8-10 people. I've had tremendous fun with Settlers of Catan and Wizard, but both of those games max out at 6 players (and you have to buy the expansion for Settlers).

Say Anything, Times Up, and Wits & Wagers are excellent suggestions. Also check out GiftTRAP.

Scattergories is a lot of fun. It would be especially interesting with multi-cultural players because the answers would really vary.
