Best path right now (1155 vs 2011)

I have been pondering this myself. Would the LGA 1155 or LGA 2011 path be a better option for an enthusiast right now? Part of me just wants the best, but I am also a stickler for bang for buck.

I game and I am an engineer who uses some intense apps.

What kind of engineer are you? What I mean is, what programs do you use? Solidworks? I use solidworks and last time I checked, it is perfectly single threaded unless you use the rendering portion of the program to create photo realistic pictures of solid models. A 6 core CPU will do ZERO for solidworks.
If your work programs are multithreaded however, go with 2011 so you can get the best of both worlds.

given the system in your post OP, getting a newer s1155 will be disapointing in terms of performance increase.

Getting a s2011 is a side step (same design, just extra cores) in every scence of the word as you will only see an improvement if you need 6 cores (or 12 virtual ones) over your current 4 cores (getting a 2600k/2700k or a 3770K would get you 4 virtual cores as well but that is not a massive improvement as it is a short list of programs that benifit with the extra 4 virtual threads)

I'd say the vast majority of people's work would see zero benefit from LGA 2011.

Agreed. Unless you know you can utilise 6 cores its not useful.
As to Ivy Bridge the benefits are pretty meagre. You had about the best system you could get.

Both of them are effectively dead ends at this point. LGA 1150 is going to replace LGA 1155 in about a year, and LGA 2011 will die soon after.

If you still have the 2500K in your signature, just hold onto it and wait for Haswell to hit. Unless you upgrade to an IB-E unit, you're not going to see a significant performance gain.

No IB-E, next step is HW-E.

And yes, both are dead in a year approx.

What makes you say this? Roadmaps still show ">3930K" and ">3960X" for late 2012 and early 2013. Haswell looks to launch on consumer platforms before enthusiast.

> never means anything else than a speedbin, just check history. And with HW-E getting ready, there simply wont be an IB-E. There is no IB-E on roadmaps covering H1 2013. And in 2013/H2-2014/H1 we gonna start see HW-E/EN/EP.

I think a X79/3820 might be a sweet combo especially if you live near a MC which has the 3820 for 220 dollars

Amd's processors are crap. They should have dumped AM3 for a new socket for bulldozer.

Agreed what difference does it make if you can transfer a crap cpu to a new board its still crap!

When AMD was making decent cpu's it matters now not so much. I would rather they follow intel and release a new socket for every generation if it means they can go back to being competitive.

I think Amd should have atleast tried to boost bulldozer with some tri channel memory. Give the fanboys a fighting chance against ivy

Throwing the question out there - I just have the upgrade bug.

I really dont see any need for upgrade at this point. I mainly game BF3 and COD right now. Both are smooth and good FPS at nearly max settings.

I may add a 6870 for crossfire - something I have yet to do.

A 6870 can max BF3?

I don't see any point in going with 2011 unless you want 6 or 8 cores or multi socket. Anything less than that you might as well stick with 1155

I'm not sure BD is memory bandwidth limited tho.

It needs higher IPC!

They need like 20% higher IPC just to get close to SB for single threaded performance.

he said nearly max and didn't mention what resolution either.

Well, the answer is easy either way. If you're a gamer with a 2500K and a Radeon 6870, and you have the upgrade bug it means it's time for a better video card.

Looking to upgrade myself at the moment from a 1366 930 and not sure which path to take.

1. 1155
2. 2011
3. Wait for Haswell.

Mainly using the comp for coding, music, wow, d3 and random AAA/Steam games as I get round to them. I'm thinking that there might actually be no point to upgrading outside of getting a second 7970 for CF atm and just put upgrade funds into an account for use with Haswell rather than locking myself into a deadend platform just to upgrade again in a year so advice would be really helpful before my tax return comes through.
