Baldurs Gate 1&2 and Planescape for the classic RPGs.

Mass Effect series, The Witcher series, and Dragon Age Origins for the modern RPG-lite.

There is no best; but there are lots of good

My personal favs (never played planescape so won't comment on it) were bg 2 for an old game and dks (dragon knight saga) for a new game. Dragon age would have been great if combat had been a bit more tactical (presentation side was wonderful; but i felt combat was lacking) I enjoyed ME1/2 but hardly thought they were special; just competent.

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

It's probably the only game outside of D2 to suck weeks/months of my life away. Once you load up on Mods (some still being produced today) it's even better looking and just as immersive a story as ever.

Either BG2+ToB or NWN2+MOTB. PS:T was excellent but its lack of combat and equipment/character customization brings it down a notch IMO.

My Favorite RPG is probably Oblivion. The open sandbox, combined with the quality of the side quests (not simple fetch type quests from other RPG sandboxes) really drew me in. The piss-poor leveling system was bad, but the freedom to play how I wanted was a real breath of fresh air.

My second favorite RPG is probably Dragon Warrior IV, or Maybe Final Fantasy 3, but both were console games.

Adom is a Roguelike game by Thomas Biskup. The player's aim is to stop the forces of Chaos that invade the world of Ancardia. This wiki is a source of information on all parts of the game, and can offer help to players of all skill levels. So what are you waiting for? Start searching!

Ancient Domains of Mystery by Thomas Biskup. Hands down the game I've played the most, ever.... and it's an ASCII based game.

Not enough Baldur's Gate 2 love in here. If you have lots of time, Baldur's Gate Trilogy is REALLY the way to go (meshes BG1 and BG2 together using the BG2 engine). Epic storyline, tons of characters, so much dialogue and so much to do. It aged relatively well too since it's sprite-based. There are lots of mods that can add variety to the game. Unfortunately for me I think I've played through the game one too many times (I think I've done at least 10 playthroughs) so I know where everything is and have talked to just about everyone.

Another vote for Fallout! Mostly the first two games, although New Vegas has totally dominated my PC gaming time for the past several months. Wasn't a huge fan of 3; I played it on the Xbox 360 and later got it on PC but after I got New Vegas it was hard for me to go back to it.

I forgot all about Betrayal at Krondor. I played it so long ago I forgot about it. Read the books too.

Fallout 2 is still one of the best, but I still had more fun with Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader. It was such a cool concept.

Personal favorite is Baldur's Gate (1 & 2 + ToB). Followed closely by Fallout 1. Kind of a sharp decline from there.

I would have to say Planescape: Torment.

However, I recently purchased the "historical/fantasy rpg" Darklands from GOG.com... it may seem dated for many gamers nowadays, but I am very much enjoying it.

Almost anything Black Isle Studios made back in the day, more to the point Fallout 1 (2 improved on some things but went from being campy to just being plain ole cheesy) and Planescape Torment is like the crowning jewel of Infinity Engine RPGs.

Troika Studio's Arcanum is also quite fantastic and takes after Fallout in many ways, with an amazing setting involving a high fantasy magical world coping with its own Industrial and technological revolution. Great game.

Morrowind for me. Oblivion was a big yawn in comparison. Skyrim will have to wait until the first sales, there's no way I'm getting it without checking out the Bethesda forums beforehand.

Planescape: Torment
Baldur's Gate Series
The Bard's Tale
Pool of Radiance
Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar

Oh, and Wasteland > Fallout

I actually have this CD sitting on my shelf but I've never fired it up for some reason. I'll have to rectify that after my PS:T (best RPG ever) play-through.

I do too actually. I remember trying to play it a couple of times and getting frustrated right off the bat and shelving it again.

PS:T is probably my favorite although I've yet to beat it. Wastelands was great too (pre fallout).
