I am biased, because I have no frame of reference. I have played exactly one RPG on the PC and that was Elder Scrolls: Arena. Don't lose the manual or you won't get into the game (that was the copy protection).

For me it's a tie between Bard's Tale (original one from the Commodore days), Adventure Construction Set (kinda is an RPG), and Diablo.

Overall Baldurs Gate 2. And if you put them all together its the Baldurs Gate Saga, which gets better as it goes on.
Most of the other named titles here are also excellent. I would have picked the KOTOR saga except we got a rushed, half-assed sequel and no finish to the trilogy.
Had they done it right that would easily have been the best RPG ever.

Can't forget Zork...you have been eaten by a grue...good stuff!

Not even remotely an RPG and not even the best of the Infocom text adventure games.

Betrayal at Krondor was great, it was the best of the transition between old-school step-10 style and the modern action RPG

The Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series were the best of the modern games.

Old School party based step-10 games I liked Wizardry 6/7, The Bard's Tale series and the Might & Magic Xeen series.

Best? I dunno

Damn good?
Oblivion
Icewind Dale 2
Fallout
Baldur's Gate II
Diablo II
Might and Magic: World of Xeen
Silent Storm (If Final Fantasy Tactics on the PS1 is an S-RPG . . ..)
Mass Effect
Knights of the Old Republic

I'm sure The Witcher 2 and other newer RPGs will be on it, but what with my Steam backlog . . ..

Sorry for being rude, but my answer would be: "Strife. And I don't care what you say".

Best MMORPG: Ultima Online, on hardcore RP servers such as Khaeros.

Hard to pick one, so here's a few.

WoW. Had to quit playing as it was wrecking my life. That's a fun game.

Alternate Reality (The City and The Dungeon) on the Atari 8 bit and C=64. (IBM/Amiga/Atari 16 bit, but I only played on the former) Amazing detail in a game from mid 80s! They dabbled in making an update in the mid to late 90s, but it's fizzled.

BG2 and PS:T. Legendary games. If you haven't played these, they both hold up very well. BG2 was one of the last games that was HARD! I don't mind the sissification of today's games, as I don't have the spare time I used to, but you rarely get a sense of accomplishment after a tough battle nowadays.

Ultima 3. Another amazing game ahead of it's time.

Oblivion and Fallout 3/NV. Many people crap on these, but when you can make a game where you want to ignore the quests and explore, it's a great game.

Gothic 1/2. Not perfect, but you were always rewarded for exploring, and that made it fun!

Black Isle in general. Fallout 1/2 also legendary. I've loved every Black Isle RPG.

While WoW is/was a good game, I don't consider it an RPG any more than Left4Dead or the Sims. It's really just a fantasy-themed team-based third person action game.

Best Story: Planescape Torment. Brilliant story with fantastic ending.
Best Setting: Deus Ex
Best World (to play around in): Ultima 7
Best Combat: Fallout 1 and 2

I can't really say what is the best overall. Depends on my mood. Baldur's Gate 2 was an epic journey. Planescape was a moving story. Ultima 7 was just fun and easy to get into. The Fallout games (1 and 2) have awesome humor and combat. Deus Ex really felt like some dark future world.

I really wish games like Planescape Torment would be redone with the Dragon Age 2 engine. But I guess those type of games wouldn't sell well anymore.

I mention this game every time a "best of" list comes around. Wasteland gets my vote. I have played that game through so many times. No other RPG has held my attention like
Wasteland. My only gripe is that it could have been a bit larger.

Not enough Baldur's Gate 2 love in here. If you have lots of time, Baldur's Gate Trilogy is REALLY the way to go (meshes BG1 and BG2 together using the BG2 engine). Epic storyline, tons of characters, so much dialogue and so much to do. It aged relatively well too since it's sprite-based. There are lots of mods that can add variety to the game. Unfortunately for me I think I've played through the game one too many times (I think I've done at least 10 playthroughs) so I know where everything is and have talked to just about everyone.

No offense, but how many hours did that take??

I second KOTOR, the first game at least, my favorite RPG (maybe favorite game of any kind). The second one had a convoluted plot and rushed, disappointing ending.
I thought the third game would tie everything together and be an epic conclusion. Well, that didnt work out did it? A pox on Lucas Arts and Bioware for turning it into an MMO.

I also liked Oblivion, Dragon Knight Saga, and Mass Effect, although I consider Mass Effect more of a shooter/rpg hybrid than a real RPG.

I notice many people have a great liking for Morrowind. I tried to like the game, but started it 2 or 3 times and got unbearably bored, lost, and frustrated. Guess it must just be me, as so many people liked to so much.

I would kill, probably literally, to have PS:T and the BG series redone with modern engines... provided I'm allowed to play them in prison.

Not an RPG though

I met the co-author of Zork in Everquest.

Was pretty neat to me to get to talk to him.

After there he was on World of Warcraft a bit.

The thing about Morrowind is that it just completely enveloped you. The atmosphere in that game was just so authentic, it felt like you really were on the edge of wilderness. I'll never forget exploring Vivec for the first time, that place was massive!
