I hate to have to be pessimistic, but with such a great shot, you might want to slap a prominent watermark across the copy on Flickr so people can't claim it as their own and spread it around the web without your permission.

Neat photo, by the way. It looks like it belongs in a wildlife magazine.

Thanks. I've strongly considered watermarking it, but for now I've left it alone. If I find people using it illegally, I'll take action.

As for being in a wildlife magazine - I'm already working that ;-) The photo editor for a prominent wildlife magazine asked me for low resolution samples and I replied, but I haven't heard back from her in a few days.

I've also entered the photo into two contests, so who knows, I may get lucky.
I'm hoping people are honest and won't "steal" the picture, but we'll see!

Hoping for people to be honest on the Internet is probably not the best of ideas.

Once the picture is floating around illegally... you can't put watermarks on those illegally-distributed copies. And with some copies existing without watermarks... it's hard to prove that it's "your" picture once the practice gets started.

Watermark it now so you don't regret it later... ESPECIALLY if you have professional plans for the photo. Keep the original, unwatermarked photo on your computer. That should end all doubt about who "owns" it... in case the issue ever DOES come up.

Better safe than sorry, no?

Great shot! Sometimes, the best shots are the result of a lot of patience and a lot of luck.

I concur with the watermark - I think you'd be amazed at how many people steal pictures to make a living. At the local mall, an acquaintance of mine noticed several of his own pictures attached to mugs and calendars last Christmas. Prior to that, I never would have suspected the problem is so large. What are the odds of running into your own photography someplace like that - and I think those thieves count on that.
