Best place to buy Garage Doors?

I'm curious where I should buy 2 new garage doors from. Home Depot and Lowes gave me quotes, but I've been told they don't always have the best prices. They tend to sell basic doors and have quite a bit of markup....with little actual handling of the doors.

I'm getting a couple of 8ft tall x 9ft wide doors... A bedroom will be over the garage and the doors will face West, so insulation is important. Should I stick with Clopay or look at any other companies? I'd like to order them online if possible and skip as many middlemen as possible.

Thanks.

Just got a new door about 4 weeks ago. Used Home Depot as a guide to getting a lower price. 16x7 Steel door, no insulation, $750 installed. Its a Wayne Dalton door, from GDS, a local business. Just shop around and have them fight over getting your business.

That's what I was planning on doing. I just wondered if there was a good online supplier of these things to bypass the local salesfolk. I'm going to install it myself and already have 2 openers I picked up cheap.

The insulation appears to be a big difference in the price estimates I've seen. As soon as you go from R6 or R6.5 up to R9 or R12 they really stick it to you. I'm just thinking it's going to be a good investment since I don't plan on heating/cooling the space with forced air.

Local salesfolk might be the best route just incase something goes wrong with installation. Warranty yo.

The local guys were honest, they said insulation was not something I needed. Came from a wood door, which are not insulated either.

Do you have a local Costco or any friends/family? I price shopped ~ 5 different places and Costco seemed to be the cheapest. They were also using the company that's the largest around.

Funny you mention Costco. I spoke with a guy at my local store. Called, setup an appointment, that day the owner called asking if he could come 45 min later. That day I was leaving so it wasn't acceptable. Made an appointment for the following day, he never showed up or even called. The owner does all the estimates.

My wife and I are remodeling our entire house, and spoke to a realtor friend about what renovations provide the "best bang for the buck." Surprisingly, she said that garage doors are one of those improvements where you can often get dollar for dollar back on your investment. It also helps improve saleability of a home. Not really a big deal if you are planning to stay in your place, but a benefit nonetheless.

Got mine from Menards, best door they had, insulated, dual pane glass windows, and steel on the inside as well as the outside. Doors with exposed insulation just look cheap. 16x8 was about $1200 on sale, but that was 6 years ago. It still looks new.

Installed it, and a door opener myself in an afternoon with the help of a friend, really not difficult at all.

I would check around with different local suppliers. I bought some glass garage doors so i had fewer options of companies to choose from, but if you get them from a local company they're there if anything goes wrong with the doors.

Old thread.... I ended up going through Overhead Garage Doors and let a local installer put them in. I installed a few openers myself and they've been doing great for the past 3-4 years. I went with a thicker R value and privacy glass so you can't see in them, but they allow some light in. I'm still working on finishing my garage project....I'm hoping to have it completed some time this year...kids slowed me down by sucking all my time and money.
