I have a Leatherman Skeletool, and it's a pretty good compromise between pocketknife and multitool.

It's pretty small and light, you can open the blade with one hand, but if you really need it you have a plier and a screwdriver, too.

Although to be honest 99% of the time I use it, it's the bottle opener, and you don't need to open anything to use that either.

Full flat grind Spyderco Delica. I already own a considerably more expensive Spyderco folder, but intend on buying this one because it's such a perfect design for small tasks.

I work in IT/IS and having a flashlight on multi-tool that's truly pocketable is a big advantage.

I use this almost everyday. IMHO would be a more used gift than getting them a single use locking knife.

When I need to carry a 'knife', I will carry one...but for most I have no clue why they do. Opening your amazon box with a fucking 6" auto is retarded.

honestly? i hate stuff that sucks.

not saying swiss army knives altogether suck- but their tools often do. if i'm using little swiss army scissors or pliars, i'm probably also cursing a lot. and their knives are typically of the 'butter' variety.

to some, a reliable, compact blade is just more useful. yes, it's just one tool....but it's a knife. it's not exactly like i'm just carrying a torx driver in my pocket.

also, there is self defense. fuck no i don't want to ever have to stab someone, especially with a 3" folder. but if i've got nothing else and am that threatened, shit yeah i'll stick someone to save myself.

I have had dozens of pocket knives in the past, but my favorite today is the OLFA below.

The scissors are not bad if you use them like intended...they aren't there to make paperdolls but perhaps cut a thread off your garment.

The phillips screwdriver is really good. It's not really a P2 head, but fills in nice for p1 through even a p3 at times.

The tweezers and straight pin are handy, the saw is good too.

The blades aren't the best of metals. They do dull quickly, but it's a $40-50 knife so it's more a consumable than a heirloom piece. Also usually by that time it's not so cosmetically nice anymore.

Most people in anyone's wedding party aren't going to be in a fucking knife fight in their lives although they may dream about it everytime that pack a useless 6" knide into their pocket.

If they do really face that kind of life then a full-sized Kabar would probably be a better choice and some kevlar.

understandable stuff, like i said- i dont hate the product, it's just not for me, as i often just need one good blade...or MAYBE a flathead or a prying tool.

and you're right, i will NEVER be in a knife fight. if the other guy has a knife, i'm throwing mine at his face and running away.

the point is just that if some psycho DOES happen to attack you, it's nice to have something that can be used in your favor. yes, a combat knife would be better, but atm my risk level does not warrant carrying a bayonet. perhaps in the future.

I prefer the more traditional folders, A nice Case texas toothpic or trapper would fit the bill.

Sorry work got busy. All the groomsmen are either cops or hunters so a decent knife that isn't "pretty" or for show would be good. You guys have given me tons of options, so I gotta do some quick research. Any other recommendations are always welcome.

BTW, good job getting them a gift that they can actually use... instead of a stupid flask, cuff links or a mug.

Hmmm - I dunno. I actually have a few SpeedSafe knives (a Leek, a titanium Bump and two G10 Tyrades), but I'm not convinced a Leek or Chive would be a good groomsman's gift. I have some misgivings about the safety of Speedsafe, particularly on a knife with a tip as sharp as those have. Also the stainless-handled Leek and Chive look and feel a little ratty to me - God knows they are not elegant.

I've carried the Leek for almost a year and have had no issues with the speedsafe. I will admit at first I was very careful about handling it, but as it turns out, it tends to lock itself sliding it into my pocket. That may just have something to do with how I handle it.

I also use the clip, I did read that a lot of people take it off and put the knife all the way down in their pocket, thus never really knowing what position it would be in when they stuck a hand in there.

You are correct that they aren't elegant, but the finish has held up much better than I would have expected for a knock about pocket knife. So, not the greatest, but great value for the price.

Thanks. I figure if you are going to do something, do it right.

Edit: Should also note I like the look of tactical knives.

Another vote for the Ken Onion knives. I have a Scallion as my all-purpose camping/backpacking knife, and I love it. The SpeedSafe is really nice.

Edit: I should add that the SpeedSafe never felt unsafe. There's a little safety at the tip. It looks flimsy, but the leverage is such that there's very little force placed on it.

Kershaw 1600. my favorite pocket knife I have ever owned.

http://www.kershawknives.com/productdetails.php?id=41&brand=kershaw

the SpeedSafe® Assisted Opening is very nice.

Its also about 3" closed so it fits in your pocket perfect.

OK, I had to edit just to add that if you don't get them this Kershaw, I will be sad for your groomsmen.

OH, and Congratulations!

i was going to vote for the leek, its my every day knife and i love it. slim, sleek, sharp, and a no-questions warranty. i broke the tip years ago by dropping it like an idiot, told them, and they replaced it for free anyway, i just had to ship it to them. great company, great knives, and they are affordable. hit up amazon, should have some kershaw choices, with prime/free shipping for a good price.

Well if they are all cops or hunters then they will probably have a good knife already and chances are it'd be more than $50.

I broke one on a new knife a while back. They replaced it for free and the replacement has held for years with no issue. On the other knife I own, its been good for 5 years, no problems.

I like the Victorinox Swiss. I carried the Champion for years, and then the Champ when it was released. They're much more useful than a single blade, and you can build almost anything with one if you're halfway clever. If you free your mind from the stated purpose of each tool, it's actually more useful than it already appears.
