why something so common?

knives of alaska:
http://www.knivesofalaska.com/xtreme.asp?c=44

my favorite pocket knife i have owned is the defender CF.

i have had gerber, winchester, clkt, sog knives before and use them on a daily basis for many years.

sog is my pick for multi-tools as i can replace the parts i break.

I would go with the SPyderco over the Kershaws.
Kershaws are good knives, but they are sold at Wal-Mart and are not as "special" as a Spyderco.
It sounds like your friends are knife people, so a Kershaw might be below their quality level.
This is a special gift, I just think it should be a special knife.

Again, nothing against Kershaw. I have one myself...

Also, I would recommend a half serrated version.

Seriously considering that one.

Manix seems like a good, large, heavy-use folder for the price. Also, plain edge is definitely the way to go.

Not knowing the recipients' personal preferences, I would still rather suggest the Delica, which weighs half of what the Manix does, sits a lot flatter in the pocket, and (at least the FFG version) cuts better. For me and many other folks, the Manix is much larger and heavier than is desirable for everyday carry.

Did you check out the Perrin knives I linked to?

Yes I looked at them. Thanks, but didn't really see anything I wanted to purchase for the guys.

You better have taken ALL of our suggestions and gave each groomsman 14 knives each.

I got a question about carrying a knife in NYC. I need a good pocket knife for my fishing trips to Brooklyn and Long Island, but I want to know if there is a length limit if I'm going to be walking around with it in my backpack. Thanks. Reps.

What type of people need pocket knifes regularly? Like...what are their major uses?

I've never owned one and I understand that they can do many things, but I can't think of one time in my life when I said to myself, "Damn I could really use a pocketknife."

You're one of those people who use your keys to open boxes, aren't you?

Be very careful carrying a knife in NYC. AFAIK basically anything that locks is legal.

Opening boxes and packages. Self defense since most of us can't CCW here in CA.

Hardly a day goes by that I don't use my knife for something. Pocket knives are for people that do things.

I don't open boxes for a living, so I don't think I'd spend $50+ for something to open a box from the 1-2 times I order off Amazon a month.

I just grab a knife from the kitchen or press the side in and rip it open.

Seems to me pocket knives are more for show than anything, or for people who want to feel like some detective or super agent by wearing one.

I'm not saying they can't be useful, I just don't see the big deal over them.

When you have something useful in your pocket you start noticing times when you can use it. It's one of those things that you don't realize how helpful it is until you've got it.

I'm sure that's true. Maybe one day I'll splurge and pick one up.

At about 12, I found this out. Been profiting since.

Seriously considering that one.

Did you see this one? It's a lot cheaper if you don't HAVE to have serrated.

I bought this a while back to replace a Ken Onion Chive that my girlfriend bought for me. My dad started using (and lost) it so I picked up one for each of us, and one for a good friend of mine. It's a really solid knife and I love the Speed Safe opening system.

This has to be one of my favorite knives. The AXIS lock system is so smooth and the knife is incredibly easy to open. Benchmade offers free sharpening for life, too.

that kershaw is fail as shit.

http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Knives...260856&sr=1-12

if the tang at the bottom of the blade doesn't protrude through the back of the knife when closed (like above, notice the more complex handle shape), it's worthless. don't open a speedsafe knife by the thumb stud unless you you keep it dull as hell and/or like slicing your thumb.

edit- no closed pic at that link. try this:
http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Scall...=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1315260856&sr=1-1

you open it with your index finger.
