I just bought a Dell and I need a bigger power supply. It has a 305W right now. I'm looking at getting a 400W because I'm getting ready to install my X600XT. Any recomindations for a cheap, but good power supply.
P.S.- I was looking at ANTEC power supplies, aren't they good?

If it's a custom job then you will not be able to replace it for a bigger one.

What do you mean? And I'll be installing it myself.

Yeah, afaik if it's a dell proprietary system, a standard power supply wont be able to plug into the dell motherboard.

What are the rest of your system specs? I doubt the X600XT will stress a nice Dell PSU unless you've got a lot of other parts in there.

BTW, do you mean 350W? 305W is a strange wattage to rate a PSU at.

Before we confuse the gentleman any further, maybe we should advise him to just order a new PSU from Dull.

First of all what the hell is a PSU. Secondly I have the Dell PowerEdge SC420. It has a Celeron D 2.53 GHZ, 512MB DDR2, Seagate 160GB SATA, Chaintech Sound Card, and some PCI-E motherboard. I have added 256MB to make it 512MB and also in=stalled the sound card.

What is a dell proprietary system?

This means only a DELL power supply will fit in a DELL computer, you cant go out & buy a regular PSU to replace your DELL psu because the connections are not compatible.

I doubt that you really need a new PSU for this. I'd go ahead and try installing the videocard with your current power supply. I'd be surprised if it didn't work since Dell PSUs are definitely better than average.

Make sure you uninstall your previous graphics card drivers before you put in the X600XT.

Not all Dell desktops use a proprietary psu. I've used standard ATX powersupplies in a lot of the newer models and they work fine. Post your Dell model and I'll tell you what will work.

Your current power supply is more than enough.
As your hardware seems very weak. A CPU and the VGA card from an high-end gaming system would probably use more power then your entire computer.

I got a 550BL. Very nice. Competes very well with the Seasonic S12-500 which is $30 more.

I replaced the power supply in a Dimension 4600 with a Enermax PSU. Worked just fine.

Dell used to use proprietary PSU's, but I have not seen one on a model in quite some time.

Now there CPU retention brackets are a whole different story

I think most people will respond with PC Power and Cooling power make the best but there's others that are as good or close for less money.
