I feel like a brother with all of you who experienced the 80s or 90s gaming when it happened. I'd like to have a beer with any of you and chat. Hell of a lot more interesting than sports.
...
I started PC gaming on a Commodore. I was there until the 286/386. It took the Intel stuff a long time to catchup to the Commodore, so I was unimpressed for many years till I felt that the audio of the Commodore (SID chip) and graphics looked as good (took forever).

Agreed on all counts!
I was a VERY early adopter of the AdLib sound card for PC, Roland MT-32, and everything in between!
...but this link is going to make your day:

Moo2 Disc version actually works great in Windows 7.

True... but there's something I miss from Moo1 - the more random elements, especially in the technology tree where you never knew which ones you'd get to pick from!
...but Moo2 is exactly the same EVERY time. Moo1 REALLY had a lot going for it! Those racial bonuses sure made a difference, too!

Playing Baldur's Gate 1 (Tutu). Have to add that to my list.

Pure awesomeness.

The first truly open-world game I ever played.

You could take your party anywhere, but you had to accept the consequences. That was missing from BG 2.

I like BG2 a little better because you drop members and still get them back. In the original incarnation of BG1 some people left permanently just cuz you booted them once.

Also in BG2 there were fewer available members but each of them had much more depth.

The steam Enhanced Editions of both games solved many of those issues.

Yeah, but it also ended up being pretty sparse pickings on most of the maps, with the events feeling pretty scripted. And it's not completely open world, with Cloakwood, Baldur's Gate, and Candlekeep being locked until their respective chapters.
BG2 was more "story areas," so they needed to be locked until you got the quest that went with them. I mean, simply coming upon the De'Arnise hold and raiding it because red ovals were there would be empty compared to knowing what it means to Nalia. It's what gives you both good and evil adventuring options rather than making you a simple wandering grave robber.

And I'd say you took your virtual life into your own hands more in BG2. BG1 is special because you start off so weak that a wolf is a major threat and a bear is an epic boss fight, but once you get a party of 6 decked out with bows it's pretty much over. I've lost count of the number of mages whose only spell was, "Quickened polymorph into robe on the floor." BG2, OTOH, has dangerous encounters sprinkled throughout, starting right at the inn on the Promenade. I even wiped twice to the Beastmaster before remembering how positioning can turn an impossible swarm into a cakewalk.
Opening a sarcophagus to find a lich tends to be pretty consequential.

That's interesting, because I had almost the exact opposite reaction.

I know how to shape a game now, but when I first played BG I think I ran into many major encounters too soon. I remember feeling a little cocky and going East because I felt like it (dammit), running into the Red Wizards, telling them off, and............... poof, there went my party in about 8 seconds.

I also ran into the Basilisks way before I knew how powerful they were, got stoned, and thanked the Gods for autosave.

The Cloakwood wizard encounter? I was completely unprepared, and stuck on that for weeks, alternately giving up and cursing, and then going back for more. After all - it's impractical to trek back to the arm once you;re so deep in the forest. There were so many event that taught me about how to play the game.

Every time I've finished BG to the bitter end (3 total, iirc) it took everything I had to beat Sarevok. Every potion, every spell, every last HP....

Seeing the final screen after a hellacious battle has always been one of the most rewarding gaming achievements for me.

BG 2 is obviously a great game, but I never experienced those types of emotions playing it. I built my party, went where I was told to go, enjoyed the scenery, and by the time I was half way through I could have put it on autopilot. I beat every encounter easily, and the final fight was very disappointing.

BG1/2 and PS:Torment are 3 games I missed. I was going off to college at that time. From what I read, playing those in their day may have been life changing.

But I installed Planescape Torment and tried to play it, the screen is just too zoomed in and the game looks too dated to play today. It actually looks worse than a lot of much older games with a different artstyle..

So I'm considering BG1 or 2, as they have updated versions, presumably with updated graphics as well on Steam. I just never liked the theme in those as much as PST, the old dungeons and dragons thing has reached it's end with me. I tend to lean towards a scifi setting anymore.

Ermagerd, so many hours spent playing Homeworld. Still one of my most played games to date. No new computer build is officially complete for me until this game is installed.

Dont presume, learn.

The graphics are not updated. All they did was get the games running on modern OS's with fewer bugs and hiccups. You can use widescreen resolutions without running weird hacks or getting strange glitches.
You can also zoom in and out slightly but the games themselves look exactly the same.

Now in BG2, playing with the Tactics mod for my first time. Wow. It adds a whole new dimension to the game.
