Say you have social anxiety .. nervousness around new people, trouble with small talk, etc...

Whats the best drug for that besides alcohol or blow ?

Like a prescription that will loosen you up but not make you jacked up and without the attachement of a social stigma or being illegal.

Anyways, just curious.

Learn to be social.

Jesus Christ are we going to give kids drugs to talk soon?

This advice is as retarded as, "have diabetes? just learn to control your blood sugar levels"..or "have cancer? learn to fight it."

Social anxiety/depression are real conditions caused and triggered by chemicals in your brain which is treatable through medication. And if you have the ability to take medicine in order to improve your conditions, which can help dramatically for certain people, you'd be only damaging yourself by NOT taking it for fear of being judged by ignorant assholes who don't know any better.

That said a lot of medication can provide side effects that are worse than the symptoms themselves, so do your reading, talk to a doctor, and experiment..chances are the first thing you try won't work right away, but over time you'll find your fix.

Good luck.

Personally, I against medications for anxiety related disorders because what triggers the chemical reactions in the brain are unfounded fears. The anxiety/fear makes the fight or flight mechanism go into overdrive. Cognitive behavioral therapy works best. In other words, just go out and don't give a shit what people think of you. Most social anxiety disorders stem from the fact that the sufferers are afraid of their social performance in the eyes of others. People are not as judgemental as the OP believes.

Diabetes and Cancer aren't "self-diagnosed" or "self-treated" ...

it doesn't sound like the OP went to speak with a Psychiatrist to get diagnosed with any personality or anxiety disorder.

If we started 'drugging' every shy wallflower in existence just because they're shy... most of this country would probaby be on drugs.

sometimes "man up and go talk to someone" is good fucking advice.

unless you feel that speaking to another human being is going to cause you to have severe panic attacks where you cry and crawl into a ball sucking your thumb, you're shy... not experiencing anxiety.

For a good number of people, this is definitely the case.

yes, unfortunately, it is... but if that's the case.. it needs to be treated by a psych, utilizing therapy as well as drugs... not an internet pharmacist or advice on a message board.

Self-confidence is all you need. It's also partly about personality - I can just barely talk to some people because we have nothing in common. I thought I had social anxiety or something in high school, but I realized that I had no self-esteem and I wasn't really "clicking" with a lot of the people I knew. My first year of college, I think I changed more as a person than all throughout high school.

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned here already, but I was Effexor XR for this reason when I was younger. It worked quite well actually, but quitting sure sucked ass. What a bitch.

I don't think there is a perfect treatment for it.
Drugs like Zoloft do help, but there is a catch. I've been on it for ~8yrs...definite loss in resolution in perception of life.

Maybe it's just age (33 now), reminds me of the lyrics from a Tom Petty song..."I aint really sure, but it seems I remember the good times were just a little bit more... in focus"

what do u mean loss in resolution in perception of life?

Been on both Paxil and Celexa for mine at different times. Both seem about the same and have not done a huge amount for me. Though my Depression has been helped by them.

Don't bother with drugs. The best thing you can do for yourself is just talk to more and more new people and get into situations until your social anxiety is either minimized or gone completely. It's called "exposure."

Maybe talk to some friends about it and see if you can get some practice meeting people / small talk, I'm sure there are people who would be willing to help, without the need of drugs I'm sure you can overcome this!

You smell like swine too. Maybe that's your online personality

In my experience, it has mostly to do with confidence. Take a few months and observe yourself to find what makes you insecure and nervous in social situations. Next, work to resolve what you find. If you are unable to do it on your own, try some counseling. The hardest thing for me to get over was the fact that there is no shame in asking for help. Just don't tell your friends

The bolded part here is the key. Confidence is everything. I used to have issues with this kind of stuff myself... until I built up some confidence and realized something: Be yourself. I know it's a cliche thing to say and that it sounds a bit fruity, but trust me, it's important. Be yourself and if people judge you for it... well, you probably don't want to be friends with them anyhow.

That sounds good but when you say to 'be yourself', what do you really mean? I guess what I'm asking is that a person is always 'himself' or 'herself' at all times anyway.I suppose you're saying that it's important to instill confidence in every thing you do but I think you probably can clear that up a bit more.
