I'll mostly be using it to print papers and such, but I wouldn't mind if it printed color images decently.

I've got an Epson CX3200, you could get the next model up for around 100$ probably. It's been great so far.

Epson ink costs a lot of money. You could get the HP psc1200v 3-in-1 for under $100, and the ink costs at around $30. Also it is very fast, ink efficient and has a maximum of 4800dpi.

Also, the 1200 model is very compact so it won't take up much space in your dorm, compared to some other printers, and it's very light weight too.

doesn't look too shabby, but now that I think about it, the 3-in-1 might come in handy.

Would it be better to get a laser printer or an inkjet? Right now we have both at home...a Brother HL 1440 (laser) for b&w, and a HP 820C (inkjet) for color. I'm also trying to figure out what I should buy for college.

I assume the laser would be better if you don't need to print in color, but laser printers are generally more expensive, no?

Yes they are much more expensive and they are bulkier too. The toner is more expensive than ink as well.

Well, it depends on how you define "more expensive". Yes, a toner cartridge for a laser printer will usually cost more than an ink cartride for an inkjet. BUT, the toner cartride can last anywhere from 5000 to 15000 pages depending on the printer and page coverage. Do you know of any inkjet cartridges that last that long?

If I were you, and had the space and could afford to have a bulky and heavy piece of equipment around, I'd keep my eye open for an old HP LaserJet, maybe a 4 or 5 series. They're bulletproof and with upgraded RAM, can handle just about everything you would ever want to throw at them.

As an aside, don't discount Apple laser printers if you see them being sold cheap -- they're actually just rebranded HPs. If you're lucky enough to find an Apple laser printer with a built in Ethernet card, you're golden -- you can print from Windows without any special software.

(FWIW, I've only owned a color printer once, and I can live without printing in color.)

To answer another question in this thread, if you're in the market for something new, Samsung makes a good line of personal laser printers -- the ML-1210 comes to mind. Also, I hear Brother's offerings are good also, however having never worked with a Brother, I can't say firsthand.

Well, FYI I don't have much space and I don't have an extra $300 for a laser printer, so my psc1200 is more than enough for me. Besides, it can scan and copy too.

I have a Samsung ML-1710 and so far it's been a great laser printer. They seem to run on special for between $79.99-$99.99 after rebates. Check the hot deals forum every now and then and you'll
probably find a good deal on one.

Heh, it's funny you mention the PSC1200, because if I couldn't own my beloved laser, that's what I'd buy to replace it. They're wonderful little machines.

I bought VeggieFrog a Lexmark last year for about $80.00. Inktanks are cheap and it did all she wanted it to. Was decent. Not a professional quality or anything, but not bad. Some of Lexmarks stuff doesnt suck if you dont need anything too fancy.

I should list it in the For Sale forum since it is just collecting dust now and I have two others.

I bought a cheapie HP 3520 or something like that from Circuit City this year for 35 bucks. Worked perfectly for printing papers and stuff. That's all I used it for tho.

I have a hp 1100 laserjet and It rocks.

Yes the toner is "more expensive" BUT I am still on my first toner AND I used to replace ink in my epson every 3`4 months.

THe quality is better than any 100 injet will get you. Printing in color and insue then I recommend the Cannon i560 @ sam's for 80 and a 30 dollar scanner.
