I'll mostly be using it to print papers and such, but I wouldn't mind if it printed color images decently.
so far...Originally posted by: Magnum375
I've got an Epson CX3200, you could get the next model up for around 100$ probably. It's been great so far.

Epson ink costs a lot of money. You could get the HP psc1200v 3-in-1 for under $100, and the ink costs at around $30. Also it is very fast, ink efficient and has a maximum of 4800dpi.
doesn't look too shabby, but now that I think about it, the 3-in-1 might come in handy.Originally posted by: Anubis
Canon i860 ~23 ppm black and white and it prints great photos
I'll take a look at it.Originally posted by: vladbot

Also, the 1200 model is very compact so it won't take up much space in your dorm, compared to some other printers, and it's very light weight too.
I assume the laser would be better if you don't need to print in color, but laser printers are generally more expensive, no?Originally posted by: eLiu
Would it be better to get a laser printer or an inkjet? Right now we have both at home...a Brother HL 1440 (laser) for b&w, and a HP 820C (inkjet) for color. I'm also trying to figure out what I should buy for college.

Yes they are much more expensive and they are bulkier too. The toner is more expensive than ink as well.

Well, it depends on how you define "more expensive". Yes, a toner cartridge for a laser printer will usually cost more than an ink cartride for an inkjet. BUT, the toner cartride can last anywhere from 5000 to 15000 pages depending on the printer and page coverage. Do you know of any inkjet cartridges that last that long?
If I were you, and I had the space and could afford to have a bulky and heavy piece of equipment around, I'd keep my eye open for an old HP LaserJet, maybe a 4 or 5 series. They're bulletproof and with upgraded RAM, can handle just about everything you would ever want to throw at them.
(FWIW, I've only owned a color printer once, and I can live without printing in color.)

Well, FYI I don't have much space and I don't have an extra $300 for a laser printer, so my psc1200 is more than enough for me. Besides, it can scan and copy too.

Heh, it's funny you mention the PSC1200, because if I couldn't own my beloved laser, that's what I'd buy to replace it. They're wonderful little machines.

Here is a laser printer:annoyingly long hyperlink but i don't think it's worth buying. Laser printers are too big and too expensive.
