Best program to make homepages with?!?!

I'm using frontpage right now, but was wondering if there was an easier program or better program to make my homepage with??.

i agree with mosdef. if you want to create good pages, use notepad. itll prevent you from learning sloppy coding habits and itll make it easier on you to code for both browsers. all the programs out there that create html for web pages end up coding for internet explorer only and while that is the majority, you still have to keep netscape users in mind.

Unless you want some premade template style page, i doubt any HTML editors are any easier than Frontpage...

Is there a special "kind" of page our trying to create?
Special format, or functions?

I have used 97, 98, and now 2000...(i pray your not using frontpage express)

Try Macromedia Dreamweaver, version 4 is out now - they have a demo on their web page. You don't really need to know any html, but it does come in handy.

I will have to agree also. When I first started coding for web pages,
I could not believe people when they said to use NOTEPAD for coding pages.

However, if you can snag a copy, try MS Visual Interdev, just for the editor. Thats what I use. It really codes the text in meaningful colours

If for some reason after 30 days it stops working, you can remove the SW, and reinstall it from the downloaded executable.

Much better than FP IMO, does not fill your site with crap html. Give it a try.

What about flash, is that only used to make button, and so on or can you actually make webpages with that??.

If you want to use Notepad then you are going to have a really good understanding of
HTML, Javascript/Jscript, XML.... or whatever you are going to put in your pages..

Otherwise, stick to frontpage where you can point and click, and it will do everything for you.

Oh, and before anyone else says, Wooahh what a flame. 18 months ago, I was using frontpage until a friend of my said I suck bigtime, and urged me to use notepad and pure code.

Now Im a Web Developer for a company..

There are 4 worthwhile editors (IMHO):
1) notepad
2) EDIT (yes, good ol' MS-DOS )
3) Arachnphilia
4) Dreamweaver

Arachnophilia is a glorified text-based HTML editor
Dreamweaver is nice in that it doesn't screw up the code you got right in the text editor.

My vote is for dreamweaver. I have version 2 running on my computer right now and I love it. It has all the tools I need and it doesn't make garbled up code.

Learning HTML seems like the way to go, but I think I'll start up with dreamweaver and then move on to HTML.

I have to agree though...Homesite is about as good as you can get:
no crappy code added in from dreamweaver and I do it all in the editor and have completely removed design mode from my version. it also color codes text according to what kind of tag it is. I do suggest, however that you purchase it and not use warez...unless you LIKE trojan horses (I have VERY current Virus protection and STILL got crappy trojans from all the 733t warez sites...ah kids...did you mommy not pay enought attention to you and so you want everything free???)!

I think the best way is to learn using a graphic based program like Frontpage or Dreamweaver, and then gradually start learning HTML when you want to customize the code... that way, you won't get frustrated right when you first start out... and you'll be able to move a little quicker, which will be rewarding and push you to keep going...

I would never ever hardcode a page in notepad. That just isn't economical... you can make better use of your time by using a program, and then going back in and editing it...

Another vote for Homesite here. Although if you don't want to risk a bit of your conscience (by warezing a copy) and pay money for Homesite, a program entitled 1st Page 2000 appears very similar to Homesite and is freeware. You can find it at Tucows.

But if you don't want to learn HTML, Dreamweaver is my WYSIWYG vote

edit- I also wanted to give propz to dcdomain; the reason why WYSIWYG editors are even around is because they're to save time. But trust me when I say this, when you learn code really well, you visualize the page just by looking at the code (a la that scene in The Matrix), so keep in mind WYSIWYG is purely for saving time.

For plain HTML, this one is free and good: Max HTML Beaty. For WYSIWYG i think Dreanweaver is the best. But that's personal.

Depends on what you are going to do, the main argument is to learn HTML before using a WYSIWYG, its knowledge that makes the workman (person) not the tools.

I started on texpad , and now use Homesite (soon to be NEO).

But the days of static HTML are growing to an end and with ss scripting etc , it will be the knowledge of the HTML that will help.

Or just learn Flash.........
