Hi there,
I would 100% any day vote for Dreamweaver !
You can create the page u are dreaming of in
this application! Dreamweaver 4 is released
it is pretty good. So go and get the Shareware
copy from www.Macromedia.com it supports and
gives a good and simple interface to support all
major technologies and it also has support for
Templates which is a majorr advantage and u do
also get Dreamweaver Extensions which help you
create Advanced Functions in you pages ! There
is also an easy to edit Css style menu through
which u can customise your pages to look uniform

BoberFett, wiser words have never been spoken. I say the same thing myself whenever anyone starts screaming about the merits of Dreamweaver.

HomeSite is more than just a text editor. Its tools are indispensable. I built my site with it (CF Studio actually, which is HomeSite with ColdFusion functionality), and I wouldn't use anything else. Ever.

And Notepad is for masochists. A real designer wouldn't touch it. It's not hardcore; it's foolish.

I am currently working on my third site. for the first one, I used purely notepad so that I could learn HTML at the same time. The next one was done with homesite because I liked the ability to preview in multiple browsers easily. Some time passed and now I am working on at third site. The layout and most of the content needs to be done by the 6th. I am using frontpage express to do most of the work, but I am fixing and tweaking with notepad as I go along.

From the perspective of learning HTML, using homesite is by far the best option. It is hard to make a good website without knowing HTML, but if you can't learn it for whatever reason, then dreamweaver is probably the best option, but frontpage (not express) is decent.

Frontpage !!!!

I've been building sites for over 4 years now and using HTML (and SGML before that) for longer , and the number of times I've been given some work and had to use note pad or a text editor to fix the rubbish frontpage churns out it fairly countless, its usally a start again job.

Frontpage 2000 is better, but no match for Dreamweaver or Homesite.

On of the problems with dreamweaver is some of the dodgey JavaScript it produces, but once you have learnt that is cool.

Learn HTML with a good tutorial (Webmonkey)and a tool where you can see and manipulate the HTML by hand.

There are too many people relying on the tools and getting frustraded when a table goes wandering or they can't conroll the chrome and they don't know how to fix it.

Go with EditPlus 2, its the best, the syntax highlighting is so very helpful, and since you can get stuff so that it will do highlighting for many other languages it is an all around good editor for programming. Ive used this for all my html and for my Java Projects for school and for work. You will learn more by hardcoding html in. if possible, try using JSP's for great dynamic content creation.

notepad will let you really learn your HTML, but you won't be able to code 100k webpage with 10 nested tables with it because it gets kinda confusing even with nice colour id.

Using frontpage won't help you much to improve your HTML though..

My vote is for Dreamweaver as best WYSIWYG editor. I would recommend starting out with Dreamweaver then as your needs grow, learn some html so you can better manage your work. (i.e. start using notepad) or just view the html code in Dreamweaver.

And as for Flash goes, Flash 5 is out now, but it is somewhat different compared to Flash 4 in layout and such. Also, if your going to use Flash, I would recommend some programming knowledge (thus better understanding/use of actionscripts) or else Flash just becomes a over-glorified powerpoint presentation. You can make buttons/movies/the whole webpage in flash (to answer someone's question earlier). Get your basics down first, and then progress to flash/java/asp/etc.

Of course, all of this is MHO.
