Can someone name the best of for the following:

firewall

spyware

virus scanner

IP blockers (PeerGuardian, Protowall)


and anything else I may need to have a safer network and the configurations needed to maximize the security.

There is No general answer to this question.

The solution depends on a Variety of specific needs that you have and the way you use your system and Internet connetion.

Every one here can give you a good answer, but it really means that it is what work best for them, not necessarily for you.

For general one package (Not Free) Firewall Antivirus Ad blocking email scan: Norton Internet Security2005 (Trial)

Free Adware: Ad-aware

Free AntiSpy: Microsoft AntiSpy b1.

Free Parental Control: Parental Filter - block porn.

This is what works for me

1) Most important: Automatic Windows updates or frequent updates
2) Any AV frequently updated - all av software has problems - so once a week housecall.trendmicro.com + Macfee's Stinger tool
3) Adaware & Spybot - Note Adaware has a problem with spyware already loaded at startup, so check startup files with msconfig
4) Zone alarm properly configured

Thanks for the input guys. I'll d/l all the suggestions and try em out.

The thing I'm worried about the most is the firewall. I want a firewall that's free and impenetrable (sp?)
I need to know how to set it up so it keeps my connection secure. So can someone please give me some pointers or point me to some good guides?

Btw, does anyone know how to use a proxy on MIRC?
