Hi,

Hope this is the right place for the this request for help.

I am about to burn some old family videos onto DVD and so am looking for the best quality media to use. Can anyone recommend a particular brand or type?

Someone has told me that DVD+R is better than DVD-R, is that true?

Thanks

I second that!! Taiyo Yuden Silver Thermals are in my opinion the best, and from my research, and understanding, DVD+R are better than -R because they can burn at a faster rate (please correct me if I am wrong on this).

I've used Taiyo's for years, and NEVER had a coaster (bad disc)!! They are more expensive, but the quality is awesome, and they are rated to last longer than other brands.

Check supermediastore, as stated above, or compare prices at Rima.com

Be patient and wait for a sale, because again, they are pricey.

The best ones that are most readily available are Verbatims. They are pretty much on same level as Taiyo Yuden. The ones you want are the MCC verbs (mitsubishi chemicals).

Ive been buring for 10 years or so, and the best ones in my experience are the old riteks(which are no longer sold I dont think), verbatims, and taiyo yuden's.

Verbatims are easier to find, IE bestbuy, buy.com etc... Bestbuy recently had them for like $9.99 for a 50 pack, which was a great deal. Had + and -'s. Try to look for deals like that imo. Taiyo's of course can be found online.

Heres a general list. I think its fairly outdated but, its still accurate.

Yes, I've used Verbatim's as well. . . nothing wrong with them as well. I'm not too familiar with how to obtain the MCC branded discs.

Depending on use, you could just wait for a good sale on Verbatim +R's at Best Buy, and load-up!

Now, I do use Verbatim for DL.

I've read good things about Ritek as well.

You can't go wrong with anything made in Japan. . .that's usually the kicker. . .

Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim indeed.

We burn hundreds of discs at work every week, & the only ones that always work reliably are Verbatim (we don't get TY).

I use Taiyo Yuden personally, & again, they are incredibly reliable; you should never get a failed burn if the burner is good.

I heard a while back that Superdvdmedia store had fake TYs, not sure if it was verified or not.

First, are you referring to Supermediastore.com? Or another site called superdvdmedia.com? I tried to google dvdmedia.com, to no avail.

I personally have ordered large quantities of TY's from *****, and haven't had any issues. They even advertise how to spot fake TY's on their website.

More recently though I switched over to rima.com after reading more extensive positive reviews about the TY's that they sell.

If you are first venturing out into buying TY's, you may want to err on the side of caution and go with Rima.com. Price was cheaper at Rima as well!!

Really? What burning software you using? Does it show realtime rate or set rate by the firmware? 22X is fast!

You may like that now but when you find out about them after you bought your stuff you won't be happy.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with Rima. I know the feeling with other companies.

For a small order to test the waters, it might still be worth it to try Rima for a newbie. Their prices are hard to beat, and I trust them more with selling authentic TY discs.
