IMO Starcraft is by far the best RTS game ever. It is the most balanced, most fun, and has a great story line in single player mode. It is almost 10 years old, and there are still thousands of people that play it every night on battlenet. oh yeah, and battlenet is pretty damn good as a gaming server.

I thought it was only like 5 years old maybe 6. Good game anyways though.

And what makes you an expert to question my credibility! Hahahahahahaha. That's a good one. I suppose you were chosen SC elite player by Blizzard themselves, eh? Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

I played SC for a very long time, any assertions you make about my game knowledge are silly. I have seen plenty of zerg hydra players get owned by good protoss dragoon players, enough to form my own opinions. Your opinions aren't going to change that fact. If you can beat dragoons with hydras, then I cheer you.

But until I see you do it, you have no credibility. Ahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

you have no credibility then. from the way you talk you never knew the game well enough to comment and the game has changed a lot over the last 3 or 4 years. Blizzard has modified the units to be more equal.

but all things equal, a good zerg player pumping out only hydras and a good toss player pumping out only goons, the zerg player wins.

I played SC when it first came out and then for several years. I haven't played lately because 3-4 years of one game is enough for me, in fact I haven't played any other game that long.

I stick by Protoss, they are the best

If you mass marines, I mass zealots and dragoons. Zealots own marines and dragoons take care of air. Zerg bases cannot withstand a dragoon rush, zerg base defenses are weak. By the way I played it for years and gave up on it sometime last year because I wanted to play other games. I wasn't the best player, but some of my friends were so good I never saw them lose. They all played protoss, every time.

you could never produce as many goons as a good zerg player could produce hydras. he can get hydras before you start pumping out goons and he pumps them out at a faster rate. hydras maneuver better than goons and you can fit more hydras in a give area than you can goons. Hydras ROCK goons all over the place.

like i said, when was the last time you played SC?

As the game progressed, my nukes would take out large areas of their bases at one time. By the time they rebuilt, I had the offensive lead using gatlin guns. Those things were lethal, they could destory a nice sized army before they got anywhere near my base.

You must not have played any good people online then. No amount of air defense can stop a concentrated bombing run or stealth fighter attack. And planes (incl bombers) are dirt cheap once you get your resources going, which you ought to have if your opponent has nukes or plasma cannons. Not too far in the game I usually have 5-10 airfields pumping out planes full tilt with assistance from costruction units/commander and I can have almost continual aerial assaults. The only thing you need is to get your first fusion reactor going and then it's cake with MohoMMs + fusions for resources.

I actually setup a game on a large metal map with me against 3 comps. I built up lots of nukes, defense, and 3-4 gatlin guns. I left the game running for several hours, came back from classes that day, and they still hadn't gotten into my base.
The computer in TA had one of the saddest AIs of any RTS. It would pretty much mindlessly build units and throw them at your base (or just get them stuck along the way) - it didn't have any adaptation of rhyme or reason to its building. I played games against the computer where it tried to build only land units on an all- water map and it overcrowded the island it was on. So it's not really valid to use strategies used vs the computer to argue about strategic depth in the game.

I never said I played online. I played plenty of LAN games, but to be perfectly honest here, TA did not get too much of my time. You ladder players will know much more than me about it. I was just giving my admittedly limited experience. Don't get too upset I don't agree with you

Really? the game runs fine on my machine (AMD 1.4Ghz, 512MB RAM, GF2 MX400). I haven't played the multiplayer games since none of my friends have it.

And no, I don't think that C&C Generals is made to look and play like SC. One of the things I like is playing on a city...it's more fun than playing on plains.

For me it's Starcraft, Dune 2, Warcraft 2, Command & Conquer, and Age of Empires 2 in that order.

exp in that order, ok, but is that assending or descending order. Lots of people save the best for last. You?

Descending order. I like to have my dessert first.

I would hesitate to label any one of those games as "best", though, since my opinion of each is undoubtedly colored by nostalgia. But that's the order I'd prefer to play them in right now, if I had the chance.

Dune II. ^_^ I still remember when I brought that game home from a trip to Maine, and instantly all of my friends were playing...nothing will replace those memories.

My vote for Age of Empires II: Age of Kings.

1.) Age of Kings (all around best)
2.) Starcraft (love the tanks)
3.) C&C Series (just because its fun)
4.) Dark Colony (love the tanks)
5.) KKND (hard as @*&$)

Was a good game, but not the depth of SC in my opinion. TA had tons of units, but the strategy was usually the same. Get nukes and the big gatlin guns and nobody could come near your base while you can easily destory theirs. First one to do so wins. The only way the other guy could survive this onslaught is if you played on a really big map.

I disagree. I got to be one of the top ladder-ranked TA players on TEN for a while in TA's prime and I can say most games did not boil down to nukes and plasma cannons - I found people who tried to do this were my easiest kills. Stealth fighters and/or bombers along with frequent scouting was all that is needed to counter it.

The greatest strength of TA is that there were so many avenues you can take to attack, and you could focus on pure strategy as opposed to simply better resource management which is what many so SC games boil down to.

I agree. TA was amazing. In MP I felt it was the best balanced RTS. There was no God unit (well, except for your commander) and there were many different ways to win. Current RTS games suffer from too much focus on graphics and too little focus on balance and gameplay (IMO - That's the problem with all genres today).
