Compusa $300 including OS.

PC Club: $120 including OS

Computer Circulation (local store): $100

This is 1,200 in parts BTW.

I can't find reviews for any of these stores.

For those who live in Southern California, who do you recommend? (if you don't live here, please comment or give suggestions.)

thanks so much!!

Are you buying the parts at the stores?
If not, its probably easier to find a computer store and have them build it. Probably cheaper than the big places and more personal service. Or you can always find a fellow AT member and pay them to do it

Do it your self, if you want to call it a 'rig,' you buy it and build it.

I was skeptical at first too but it's really a breeze now.

the PC Club in San Diego, for example on Claremont,
had a good tech crew when i last used them (been
a while).

it's probably all new names & faces. i suggest
talking with the tech people, preferably with the
person who's actually working on your computer..

If you want it done right, do it yourself. My first build cost $2300 in 1998

if you buy parts at newegg i would try and put them together yourself. I really doubt you will break the parts doing it yourself if that is what you are worried about.

if you hit a snag though there is a chance the computer won't work straight away and it could take a few days to figure out how to fix it. If you are worried about this i would go to an online retailer that lets you customize stuff and then builds it for you - ie: dell, and i think i remember one called cyberpower or something silly like that. Or there are others.

The problem with buying all kinds of parts yourself and then letting someone at compusa build it for you is they might have no experience whatsoever with the particular motherboard you chose and most motherboards have some quirks, ie each mobo names the settings in bios differently. If you go with an online retailer they have built hundreds of pc's with the setup you choose and have it down to a science already.
