It was the best about 8yrs ago...

GAIM is actually running on that old sony vaio laptop (suse 9.2 pro) but the main box with the 2005fpw is running AIM 4.8 with AIM+. I can not stand the newer versions of IM.

Athlon 64 3500+ Winchester
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
ATI (Connect3D) Radeon X850 XT PE
2x 512MB of Crucial Ballistix PC4000

Sound Blaster Audigy
NEC FE991SB CRT
Stupid old Alienware case, mouse, and keyboard.
Western Digital 74.5GB HD
2x Optical Drives: Sony DRU500A DVD-RW and some old CD-RW drive.
1x 3.5" floppy drive
OCZ Modstream 450
3 old Chieftec case fans.

Everything in bold is what I upgraded since I bought my Alienware system 2 years ago. Which I wouldn't have bought if I knew that building my own PC was even possible.

I have the X850 and Neo4 right now, I just haven't put them in yet. Got them today.

More of a monster machine.

I don't think there could be enough hardware in a box and be called overkill, in the computer industry. or is there?

thegimp03, my rig would waste his in loading times. And game framerates. And 16gb of ram in anyone's pc is a waste. A single 32-bit application can't address more than 4gb.

Tell that to him yourself then. I'm just pointing out that's a freakin monster machine..."Best rig" can be considered in a variety of ways is all. Spending $5,000 on ecc registered ram is a huge waste though imo.

I'd just like to address a few things:

What *kind* of rig are we considering? It's obvious there is no one rig that is the best at everything, so we should have several categories! If we are talking gaming then those dual Opteron rigs with 16 GB ECC ram aren't going to hold a candle to a nForce4 chipset with 1 GB ram in with a FX-55 even though they will run Maya much faster!

Also someone mentioned SCSI... I used to be a big SCSI fan (my last machine had 4 Cheetah X15s in RAID0 on a cached Mylex controller.) From my own tests, two Raptor WD740 drives in RAID0 absolutely SMOKE two Cheetah X15 drives in RAID0. And I dont have to cram 7 feet of LVD cable into my case anymore either!

To be fair, the Raptors are, for all intents and purposes, SCSI drives with an SATA interface...

I'm looking forward to see what SAS brings to the table though
