My Linksys WRT54GS appears to finally be dying: It has provided excellent service for 9 years.
I'm looking to replace it and read the "Best WiFi Router" string here (http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2434362), but I don't believe in hijacking threads and have a somewhat different setup: I have zero concern about wireless coverage or speed.
The Linksys is connected to 2 desktops, a printer, and a WD TV Live box: all hard wired. In our apartment we have no smart phones, no tablets, no i-Anything, and no gaming devices. It's just the two PCs, printer, and the WD TV Live to access movies saved on network drives plus access Netflix. We do not use guest accounts, period.
I checked out the routers that were recommended on the previous string and wonder whether for those price points ($147 for the ASUS RT-AC66U, $113 for the ASUS RT-N66U) I'd be overpaying for what I need.
I was seriously considering the Linksys WRT54GL and a member indicated on the other string that it was a bad choice in every way. My guess is that the major concern is the security (which is outdated), but, as someone else pointed out, the firmware on those WRT devices was rock solid. My own experience with the WRT54GS has been perfect. The past few days the signal has been dropping and that's the first time I've ever had to even touch it, in 9 years.
Have also never had any bad experiences in terms of any kind of intrusion.
In my situation, where I don't even use wireless, is the WRT54GL still a bad choice?
I considered the Linksys N900 (EA4500), but was turned off by all the Cloud Connect BS. There seems to have been boatloads of complaints about it.
Would really like advice on picking a new router that would suit my rather unique needs.
