Have you guys nominating Chrono Trigger played Xenogears? They're both awesome but Xenogears is easily more epic.

Xenogears was good but the second disc was rushed. You could tell that either they were running out of money or were approaching the release deadline and they hastily threw the rest of the game together.

Also, I've watched enough anime and played enough JRPGs to get tired of the Japanese fascination with quasi Judeo-Christian themes. OMG angels! OMG God is a machine! Soooo meaningful! Apocalypse! Judgment! My brain is so overwhelmed because it seems so meaningful but I can't really articulate why! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN???? (see Youtube: "double rainbow").

I'm gonna throw Ultima 6 out there since we're starting to talk about PC games. Dunno if it's "best ever" but it's legendary enough to reminisce about. Ultima 6 gets extra credit for teaching a very young me what a prostitute is. Also I remember the bit where you're trying to get the rune of humility in New Magincia and the mayor asks you to find the most humble townsperson. I didn't know what humility meant because I was like 8 so I went to the first person in town and asked him about humility, and he said, "oh I'm the most humble person in town." And I remember being like, "oh this is easy, it's this guy." Then the mayor was like, "um, no." And so I went through like 5 people saying they were the most humble and the mayor rejected each one. Then I talked to one guy and he's like "oh no way I'm the most humble, I'm not humble at all." And so I was like, "hah it can't be this guy he admits that he's not the most humble." And so I tried every other dude in the town and was like "wtf this game is bugged."

Then I looked up humility in the dictionary.

These conversations always come down to some game we played a long time ago, probably when we were kids. Funny how that works out. I'm usually inclined to vote just like that myself, typically say Chrono Trigger, but hell I just finished Mass Effect 2 and loved that game. And now that I think about it, KOTOR is even more epic.

PS, my main gripe with FF7 was the combat itself. It took forever to cast some of those spells, specifically ones like Leviathan, and I don't remember there being a way to speed through/skip it.

I've considered that too. But where are the people who grew up playing FFX? I never see them anywhere. Is there some sort of generation gap that keeps me from frequenting the same discussion sites as them? Or have console RPGs objectively gone into decline?

Earthbound is such a crappy game. I can't believe that it would be your favorite RPG, unless you can't separate nostalgia from actual quality.

I've gotta agree. I tried it for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and I just could not get into it at all. Earthbound gets a lot of praise mostly, I think, because of nostalgia and the rarity of the cartridge. The setting was unique at the time, but that was about it. Everything else felt mediocre.

Of all the RPGs I've played on the SNES, earthbound is by far my least favorite.

PS, my main gripe with FF7 was the combat itself. It took forever to cast some of those spells, specifically ones like Leviathan, and I don't remember there being a way to speed through/skip it.

Yea, no kidding. The knights of the round summon was at least a full minute every time you used it. Got annoying REAL quick.

You do NOT want to go to those types of boards.
They exist, and they are pathetic.

Dragon Quest 3 is my all time favorite! It was such a good game and I really loved how the story tied in with the original and incorporated the world from the first game, which is my second favorite RPG but probably mainly due to nostalgia... such good memories of the Dragon Quest 1 - 4

there was a "short summon" option but i don't remember if it worked for KOTR, it did for the espers. It basically just showed 0 cinematic when vs the 2 hour movie

That was in 8, not 7. AFAIK there is no way to shorten them in 7.

Other than the overly complicated linking of magic and stats and such, FF8 was actually my favorite of the bunch.

im pretty sure there was because i didn't play 8 and 9 wasn't nearly as bad with the summons

Hmm, I must investigate when I get home... If I have been missing out on shortened summons I'm going to feel like a total tard.

Chrono Trigger for story line, Oblivion for it's ability to immerse me in the world for well over 200 combined hours of playtime (weak on story though).

I just realized that it's been a while since I've posted (hi guys!)

Well I couldnt help but jump into this thread to chat about the great RPGs. I'm mostly just interested in the varied responses because I hate nailing down my absolute favorites of any genre. I dont know about you by my list of top games (pick a genre) are always shuffling around.

But as I was reading through I noticed that no one has brought up Fallout 3, Diablo 2, Dragon Age or Mass Effect. Yes, one of those is a PC only title and another is arguabily not an RPG (Mass Effect, but I considering it an RPG that skirts the line as action RPG--but its totally an RPG in my book).

Ok, so Diablo is a PC only title. Lets remove that one. That leaves me with Fallout 3, Dragon Age and Mass Effect. If I had to choose, I suppose it's neck-and-neck between Fallout 3 and Mass Effect. I just adore both of these titles for different reasons. I cant choose.

For what it's worth I've compelted Fallout 3 twice and Mass Effect 7 times.
