Total Annihilation, Warcraft III, Shogun: Total War (the Warlord Edition is available for $5 in the bargain bins), C&C: RA2, C&C: Generals.

Warlords Battlecry is also very good......III just came out but if you want to save $$$$ you can get II much cheaper....and they are very similar. I also second the accolades for RoN. And I've heard raves for the expansion. Don't know if the expansion adds to the experience of the original but it's worth looking into.

Anything in the total war series (Shogun, Medieval, and soon Rome). BTW, Rome Total War (September 2004) was rated best of show by both IGN & Firing Squad (beating out HL2, Stalker, & Doom 3).

End of story

BattleZone

(okay, it's a RTS+FPS, it's a shame that most people here don't know what they're missing, and this game is over 4 years old)

The Myth games are fun, no resource management- just tactics. They can be had for cheap these days but the online component is a little less prominent than Warcraft or the Age games.

I love that game. I don't know of any other game that's so true to it's name.

I love the fact that during a large scale engagement, your troops have difficulty moving through the battlefield because the entire area is strewn with the carcases of falled friends and foe. Anyone else use nukes to "clean" the battlefield so your attack doesn't get bogged down?

My problem with Homeworld I and II is that I get distracted by all the awesome graphics. Sometimes it's just fun to send in a ship to watch it get blown up (yes, it sucks to be in my Navy ). The effects are amazing.

Totally agree - best RTS ever. I've tried several RTS games since playing TA and couldn't get into any of them. I wish they would've created a TA 2 that had nothing but improved graphics, netcode, and more units.

Battlezone was a great game, one of the most under rated of all time. I also thought Command and Conquer Generals and C+C Generals Zero Hour were excellent.

I agree with several people here on the TA comments. I got spoiled by this game and played it so long, no game has made me play as much as that did, and I think I will pull it back out and play some more, been a few years.

Anyone who said Total Annihilation is absolutely correct. I've played many RTS, since I started with TA and I just haven't found anything nearly as good. It has more units than any other game, plus you can make your own, maps are bigger than most other games, and more little details that just make it great (like accuracy of shots, 3D terrain REALLY effects movement and attacks, wind, set forests on fire, carcases, just to name a few.)

Starcraft is good too. It might keep you entertained for a while if you haven't played it already. The strategies are more limited than TA, but the online play is great, especially use map settings (ums).

I also pray for the day that TA 2 would come.

Did you just hijack your own thread?

Haha, that's actually pretty funny

Starcraft is the best RTS in my opinion.

Rise of Nations is good times. Starcraft is the undeniable best RTS ever.

I also support TA as the best RTS....Starcraft was very good but I could never get over the obtrusive interface. With a command interface that covered almost the entire bottom half of the game screen, there was way too little play screen for my tastes.....and with the game resolution stuck at a max of 640X480 (IIRC) you didn't get to see very much of the battlefield. TA's interface was much better.

Age of Empires 2: Conquerors, Starcraft, Homeworld, all great. Civilization, thought I never palyed it, is supposedly The best RTS of all time. So i deffer to the accademy.

AOM, AOT, WC3, WC2, RON, C&C Generals, all decent but ultiamtely flawed games.
