I need to replace a 4 year old pair of running shoes, I want the best I can get for under $100.
There are several styles by Asics, Nike, New Balance that are within that pricepoint.
Would love some feeedback.

Thanks

I never 'got' fancy running shoes.

I used to jog 4 miles 3-4x a week and ran bunch of races (far less now). My time is decent at 8:30~ per mile.

All this is done with cheapest shoes I can find ($25 Reebok or $30 New Balance). They were all always comfortable and never gave me problems.

Obviously your not running in these shoes so unsure what your looking for in a running shoe?

I'm guessing style, fit, and color is more important than providing motion control or stability.

I like Running Warehouse as they allow free returns and free shipping, if you check around I'm guessing you can find a 15% off coupon too.

Here is a link to the Mens Clearance sale shoes: Lots of excellent choices from Asics (run a bit narrow) to Brooks, Nike, Saucony & Mizuno.

I'm currently running in Nike Equalon's after beating my Brooks Glycerin 7's up. Just ordered a pair of Glycerin 8's and Nike Vomeros.

I second this.

Well fitting shoes is better than expensive poor fitting shoes.

Brooks is pretty damn good

Seconded.

Brooks without question.

Was a huuge fan of the overbuilt New Balance (and to a lesser degree Asics). But dollar for dollar pricepoint, Brooks is the best built, sturdiest shoe on the market. Bar none!

All I use nowadays is Brooks.

If you're serious about it, go to a running store and have them watch you walk (preferably have them video tape you running on a treadmill if they have that kind of setup) to see your gait. Then you find a shoe that supports a pronated/neutral/supinated step. I have also heard from a few sources that it's recommended to replace running shoes every ~400-500 miles.

A pair of running shoes for 4 years? You are obviously not running in them enough. I get whatever I can get at Big5 on sale: New Balance, Asics, Adidas, Nike - it doesn't matter. My budget is about $40 tops. As long as it fits and feels good - I'll need new pair soon enough anyway. I run about 3 miles daily, more on weekends.

Nike Lunarglide 3's here, when they get wore out I'll either buy another pair, or it the 4's are out and an improvement I'll get those instead

Thanks for the links. As for style, fit and color....brother I'm 42 and couldnt care less what they look like as long as they are comfortable and provide good support.

QFT. Get a fit test done, your feet will thank you. And yes, running shoes should be replaced between 300 and 500 miles, depending on the terrain and weather.

I've had excellent experience with Brooks Adrenalines, but they're usually right at 100 dollars. Discounted slightly from a running club membership though.

It's all about what feels right when you're trying it on. I ran for a year in a pair that I thought fit me fine until I tried some Nike Pegasus. The difference was night/day. Those things fit me perfectly and I will never change.

I ended up buying a pair of Asics GT 2160's. Tried on a crapload of shoes before settling on these. Man, what a difference from my old pair.

the people telling you to replace running shoes every 300-400 miles are the people selling you shoes. it's like jiffy lube telling you to change your oil every 3 months or 3000 miles or a mattress guy telling you to change your mattress every 8 years.

If you're into barefoot running, I just got a pair of Nike Free 3.0's, and they're the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn. I swear each shoe weighs like 3oz., and it almost feels like wearing a sock with a sole on it.

They tend to run narrow, so guys should probably order the wide size. They also have built in Micro-ban padding so you don't need to wear socks and worry about them getting smelly.

I got a pair of funky blue/flouresecent orange Free's. It certainly gets me noticed They're great to wear with jeans and I'm constantly getting asked "where'd you get those?"

You can build your own for about $90 on Nike's website (+30 day no-questions asked return):

It all depends on what you are using your shoes for. Is the person jogging a mile two times per week at a 13 minute pace, or running 10 miles at a 7 minute pace three times per week? Road or trail? Are they overweight?

Changing engine oil every 3k or 3 months is probably overkill for the daily driver (and you can verify this through oil analysis), but changing it every 3k or 3 months might not be enough for a car that is raced and constantly redlined. It's harder to quantify this with shoes, but I can at least say from experience that after 6 months of running 25-30 trail miles/week, there is a *huge* difference in how my legs feel just by replacing my shoes.

Again back to a pronated/neutral/supinated step, the person who jogs two miles per week will have X number of impacts with the ground. The person running 30 miles per week will have some number of steps >> X. Increasing the number of bad impacts by a large multiple, or even an order(s) of magnitude can injure a person.

depends on the surface you running on.
