Best SATA DVD burner?

Well, i finally got to the DVD burner portion of my new build. Just need a basic one, no frills, no lightscribe. Or, maybe lightscribe. But anyways, i just want the fastest and the best, I hear the Pioneer is good. Any suggestions?

Have you ever made any lightscribe labels with the SH-183L? I've been trying, and it seems like they are crappy. It's as if it's not compatible with the lightscribe 1.2 discs.

you need special discs, they are very common, but they do cost slightly more than regular discs. BB has them on sale at least once a month it seems.

Does anybody know the difference between these and the origionals? I haven't noticed a difference.


Servbot, have you tried the latest software, or printing the discs twice?

I have lightscribed onto a few current media, using my Samsung 182L. The secret is to keep the drive firmware AND the lightscribe application software updated.

They reduced the amount of time they take a little bit

Burn the label at least twice for DVDs. I personally recommend burning 3-4 times for a DVD label and 2 times for a CD label.

You're just burning over the burn. Just makes it darker.

Yep. It's got a "starting point" and will burn in the same spot.

Depends....if you want lightscribe the 183 is still the best IMO.

Ah my bad I was thinking of the 203B, which does not. I guess the 203N must be newer because before I thought only the 203B was available.

I have had an Asus for a few months and its very quiet (it's even named Quiet Track) and works well. I am getting one to replace my Sony 820 which is fussy over the slightest smudge. Asus at Newegg:
